This splendidly presented, meticulously researched and remarkably illustrated book has been published as a posthumous tribute to the author. The Midland Railway Society has done Ian Howard proud.
It is difficult to envisage the Steel City as not being a centre of railways. However, in 1840 the pioneering North Midland line took the low road and by-passed Sheffield, whose hills and valleys, whilst providing water power in abundance, weren't conducive to early railway construction. But Sheffield's industrialists weren't to be left out, they must be joined to the developing railway network, hence the drive to bring into being the Sheffield and Rotherham.
