BLOMTYD VIR KARLIEN

Hy was Renaldo Dickson. Want dít is hoe verdriet lyk.

RUNNING FOR HIS LIFE

A BASEBALL cap, a scraggly beard, a pair of sunglasses. Private security on high alert. A bullet-proof car. An escape into the night. It sounds like the makings of a spy movie, yet all this and more went down the day André de Ruyter fled the country with little more than the clothes on his back and a suitcase in his hand. There was so much secrecy and so much tension it almost didn’t feel like real life, a close confidant of the former Eskom CEO says. The source, who’s speaking to YOU on condition of anonymity, says André had no choice but to flee. He’d upset many people in high places following his e.tv interview in February when he’d made astonishing allegations of deep-seated corruption. There’d already been an attempt on his life…

VYFSTER-GESIN

AS MUSIC LEGEND LIONEL RICHIE JOINS THEIR MAJESTIES BUCKINGHAM PALACE GARDEN PARTY THE KING AND QUEEN HOST 8,000 GUESTS AT JOYFUL PRE-CORONATION CELEBRATION

It was the first garden party of the new King’s reign — and the only one before his coronation In a week when Buckingham Palace played a pivotal part in a historic occasion, the royal residence hosted a very special garden party ahead of the coronation. Not only did it mark the first of the new monarch’s reign, but it was also the only garden party to take place before King Charles and Queen Camilla were formally crowned, as almost 8,000 guests, including music legend Lionel Richie, converged on the immaculately manicured grounds to celebrate. Before heading into the crowds to meet guests, many of whom were charity workers and diplomats, the royal couple stood on the steps of the palace as the national anthem played. Camilla looked typically elegant in a favourite…

I SURVIVED!

I SURVIVED A MUDSLIDE SHERI NIEMEGEERS, 47, INVESTMENT ADMINISTRATOR It was a long weekend in May 2018 and my partner, Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip from my home in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, to visit friends in Nelson, British Columbia. We are both adventurous, and we couldn’t wait to go hiking and exploring. It was our first trip together after six months of dating. At around 5.30pm on Thursday, May 17, we were driving on a steep mountain road known as the Crowsnest Highway. I was texting updates to my family and enjoying the view. We weren’t aware there’d recently been flooding in the area. When I looked up from my phone, I saw a wave of mud and an enormous tree barrelling down the mountain, right in…

KATE'S ‘WARY’ OF MEGHAN'S OLIVE BRANCH

This Christmas will mark nearly three years of silence between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, whose once friendly relationship collapsed in the months of drama that ensued in the aftermath of “Megxit” in January 2020. And their deep-rooted rift has shown no signs of healing, despite Kate, 40, and Meghan, 41, being just inches apart from each other at both the Queen's Jubilee celebration in June and, sadly, her funeral in September. Royal experts have made it clear there could be a question mark hanging over Prince Harry and Meghan's Royal titles if they continue to throw their trademark “truth bombs” at the monarchy in their controversial new Netflix documentary as well as in Harry's upcoming emoir Spare. Now, in an unexpected turn of events, a source reveals to Closer how Meghan has…

Dennis and Porsche head the new generation

An undercurrent of trepidation accompanied the dawning of Formula E’s third-generation era. Throughout the off-season, a series of concerns became apparent, and threatened to take the sheen away from the all-electric championship’s next epoch. The paddock was hoping for a clean race, devoid of troubles; as the chequered flag fell in Mexico City, it appeared that it had got its wish. Once last year’s Seoul finale came to a close, the venerable Gen2 cars were put out to pasture. Formula E’s facts and figures pertaining to the new car were impressive, but private and collective testing uncovered multiple teething issues. The new battery was prone to overheating and derating, requiring a packaging redesign. Supply chain problems interrupted manufacturer testing, meaning that spare parts were at a premium. But the biggest concern…

Wisconsin An audio recording released this week shows a Donald Trump campaign leader privately acknowledging two days after the 2020 election that Joe Biden won Wisconsin fairly, yet Trump and his surrogates proceeded to insist publicly that the election had been stolen. Andrew Iverson, then head of Trump’s campaign in Wisconsin, can be heard saying, “Democrats just got 20,000 more [votes] than us,” but said the Trump campaign “is going to continue to fan the flame and get word out about Democrats trying to steal this election.” Trump went on to demand the election be overturned, force costly recounts, and sue unsuccessfully multiple times. No evidence of significant fraud was found. The recording was provided to the Associated Press by a former Trump campaign official. In the recording, Iverson elicits laughs…

Pick up the TAB

Adozen years after the original iPad, the home button has finally disappeared from this 10th Gen model. We've come a long way from a gadget that was once dismissed as just a bigger iPhone. This tablet brings a complete and much-needed overhaul to the ‘standard’ iPad range, and it's available in a few nice colours including a rather lurid pink (as well as blue, yellow and a more regular silver). What's on offer here is essentially a slightly Stripped-down iPad Air, and there are several reasons why that makes sense… plus several reasons why it doesn't. This is not quite the base-level iPad, by the way - the 9th Gen model is still around (complete with its traditional home button). It's not that Apple doesn't want to say goodbye; it's just that…

No new handguns

Ottawa In response to the Uvalde, Texas, school shooting, Canada’s government intends to freeze handgun sales, capping the number of legal handguns in the country. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said this week that gun violence in Canada has worsened and warned that Canadians “need only look south of the border” to see the consequences of inaction. “Other than using firearms for sport shooting and hunting,” Trudeau said, “there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives.” The government’s bill also includes a “red flag” measure to confiscate guns from anyone deemed to be an immediate danger. A mandatory buy-back program for assault rifles, banned in 2020, will follow. Police turn on Brits Paris The U.K. demanded an investigation this week after French police tear-gassed and pepper-sprayed British fans at…

Form Fixers

Summer, is that you? There’s no happier feeling than hitting the pavement or trail once again sans earmuffs and wool socks. And when you take off into the new, hopeful season, consider this training shakeup: Even the average runner should be working both sprints and endurance runs into their routine for maximum benefits. If you’re a marathoner trying to get your PB, speed work will make you faster. (Plus, studies show that sprints can reduce body fat, if that is a focus for you.) Prefer fast and furious? Know that longerdistance cardio is powerful for overall wellness too. Furthermore, one study found that training for a marathon, even at low intensity, reduced vascular age (essentially, the health of your arteries – key for heart health) by four years. We know – shaking…

LOOKING AHEAD TO HIS BIG DAY KING CHARLES III PREPARES FOR HIS DATE WITH DESTINY

In a magnificent ceremony at Westminster Abbey this Saturday, King Charles III will meet his destiny. Becoming monarch is a role he has prepared for his entire life and, at the age of 74, after what has been called the longest apprenticeship in history, he will be the oldest ever to be crowned in this country. His date with royal fate comes almost eight months after the death of his beloved mother the Queen, who over the course of her 70-year reign paved the way for him to step up for his inevitable duty. As cries of “God save the King” fill the air – and with his popularity polls on a high – His Majesty will take centre stage in a historic ceremony broadcast live around the globe. By his side will be…

What I Wish I’d Known Before Getting a Facelift

I can’t believe that I am talking publicly about my facelift and that millions of people now know how vain I am. But since I don’t believe in gatekeeping, and this was not a decision I took lightly, I’m embracing the power of transparency and sharing information. Having been in the beauty industry for many years as a makeup artist, beauty expert, author, and brand founder, by the time I hit my late forties, I’d already tried it all: Botox, fillers, lasers, radio frequency, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), LED, microneedling, and microcurrent therapy. Many of those procedures were effective, if not miraculous, and they did help smooth, tighten, and lift. But as I rounded the corner into my fifties, I found these treatments were less and less effective, and I was no…

SMALL WONDERS

‘LIKE ALL OTHER CHILDREN THEY’RE CAPABLE OF ANYTHING EASTER may have come and gone, but three kids are still on the hunt in this garden, peering into bushes, lifting pots, inspecting trees and tiptoeing through flowerbeds. The chocolate eggs have long been devoured, but there are still plenty of treasures out here and this trio is determined to find them. “I have one!” eight-year-old Izak yells, holding up his prize: a snail plucked mid-journey down a path in the corner of the garden. It’s enough to make mom Rika Lowe (35) roll her eyes. Izak and his sisters, Abigail (12) and Khloe (10), have a thing for snails, she says. “I don’t know where their obsession comes from, but they love collecting them. They have bowls of them in the house and the things will…

TRUMP’S 2024 TEST

By the time former President Donald Trump left a Salem, N.H., high school auditorium on Jan. 28—his return to the campaign trail after an unusually sleepy start to his 2024 campaign—he had ricocheted off many of his standbys: indulging conspiracy theories, nursing conservatives’ fears about race and gender, and offering an alternative reality to his successor’s record. The hour-long diatribe suggested President Joe Biden should have thrown his son Hunter under the bus, that members of the Taliban did not fight at night because they lacked “binoculars,” and that wind turbines knock planes out of the sky. For a fragile front runner facing criticism over the shaky opening to his latest bid for the White House, Trump’s initial showing did little to calm the skittishness among Republicans and some former supporters…

It’s this intensity that has propelled him to where he is today – the owner and chef patron at fine-dining restaurant Les Créatifs in Bryanston, Johannesburg, by way of Venice, Miami, New York and Paris. What started as an after-school work placement in Venice has become his life’s passion, and his recent accolade of chef of the year at the Luxe Restaurant Awards cements his position in the Joburg culinary scene. Wandile’s journey started at Capsicum Culinary School, after which he headed to Italy, where he underwent his culinary trial by fire on a yacht operating in the Mediterranean. The cat is a liar and a coward, and it’s got me by the big toe

There is no milk. Anyone could have seen this coming and yet, evidently, no one did. It’s the reason the kitchen is empty at 8.15am: both my sons will have come downstairs for coffee, discovered the lack of milk, and returned to their rooms to sit, arms folded, until somebody does something. The cat comes through the flap, walks to the cupboard, and miaows. It is difficult to know whether anyone else has bothered to feed the cat, and the cat is no help in the matter. The cat is a practised liar. “Are you sure?” I say. “Miaow,” says the cat. I open the bin, and find an empty packet of cat food sitting right on top. “Would you like to change your story?” I say. “Miaow,” says the cat. “Fine,” I say, knowing from…

RUPERT’S LOVERS TELL ALL DIVORCED, JILTED & DUMPED BY EMAIL!

ANN LESLEY SMITH 2 WEEKS BROKEN ENGAGEMENT! Two weeks is pretty swift for an engagement, even for Rupert Murdoch, but that’s all it took for him to go from engaged to splitsville with his latest heartbreak victim, Ann Lesley Smith. The 66-year-old former dental hygienist was given a $3.5 million 11-carat Asscher-cut diamond solitaire ring from Rupert on St Patrick’s Day in March, but by April 3, it was all over. Sources told the UK press it was Ann Lesley’s reluctance to be in the public eye that prompted the end of their whirlwind romance – she was being targeted online as a conspiracy theorist after calling the COVID emergency a “plandemic” in a radio broadcast. “It was too much for him and too much for her,” says an insider. “She’s a very religious…

Keeping Kids Safe in the Metaverse

Keeping Kids Safe in the Metaverse

THE METAVERSE HAS THE potential to transform education in the classroom. Yet we must be careful how we allow Big Tech companies to intrude into our schools. Next-generation educational technology must not come at the cost of turning our children into nothing more than yet another data extraction source. Before we allow the likes of Meta, Google and Tencent into the fabric of our education system, we need clear assurance that it will not simply be “business as usual.” Before we let our children anywhere near the metaverse, we must be absolutely clear who is watching, and how. In the next 10 years, the biggest development in education will be the introduction of the metaverse into everyday learning. Virtual Zoom classrooms have already become the norm thanks to the pandemic. What if…

‘GUILTY’ HARRY’S SECRET ROWS WITH MEGHAN

After an emotional stay in the UK which saw them mourn the loss of the Queen after her sudden death last month - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are settling back into life at their mansion in California. The couple, who stepped down as working royals in January 2020 and have been estranged from most of the family since making a series of damaging allegations, saw themselves unwittingly catapulted back into a life of duty as they greeted mourners and made several public appearances. It may be a role that Harry, 38, had become accustomed to since birth, but after two years of a “quieter” life Stateside, teamed with the sad loss of his beloved gran and the ongoing tensions with his family, the signs of physical and emotional exhaustion were etched…

However, Brooks’ modesty and natural charm belied a fierce competitor with huge talent. Born in Cheshire, he followed in his father’s footsteps by training as a dentist. He started racing in his mother’s Healey Silverstone in the early 1950s and his rise was meteoric, notably becoming the first Brit to pilot a British car to a post-war International victory when he triumphed on his F1 debut in a Connaught in the non-championship Syracuse race. The man who accidentally threw away £100m

For a man who has lost $40m in the past week, James Howells seems really rather jolly. “Pah!” he says. “That’s nothing. I used to be worth half-a-billion. Today it’s only $130m [£107m], but it doesn’t bother me. If I thought about it too much I’d go crazy.” Funny he should mention going crazy, because that’s exactly how I’d imagined him. Not just crazy, but totally barking. Mad as a box of frogs. And I’m a bit disappointed that he isn’t. Howells, 37, is the man who famously – accidentally – threw away a computer hard drive on which was a cryptocurrency wallet containing 8,000 of the first bitcoins ever mined. When, in 2013, he (or his partner at the time – more on this later) chucked out the drive,…

CHRIS AMON That the Kiwi never won a round is a statistical anomaly up there with Stirling Moss never being crowned world champion. He led 183 laps across seven different races, yet bad luck was never far away. Amon’s visor woes at Monza in 1971 are oft-discussed, but even more galling was leading the first 72 laps of 90 at Mont-Tremblant in 1968 before his Ferrari’s gearbox expired. ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW A to Z OF THE CORONATION

ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, who gave the sermon at the funeral of the Queen last September, will conduct the ceremony. But while he will anoint and crown the King according to the rites of the Church of England, other faiths will also be represented. “We’ve been scrupulous about making sure other faith leaders and Christians are respected in their own beliefs without a compromised mixture,” said the archbishop. The King has also contributed, he added. “With intense depth of knowledge he has helped shape the service with comments and questions and he is very, very well prepared.” BALCONY After the formalities, the world will be waiting to witness that most iconic of scenes: the gathering of royals on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to greet…

Massa eyes legal challenge to 2008 title loss

Massa eyes legal challenge to 2008 title loss

FORMULA 1 Felipe Massa is weighing up legal routes to challenge the outcome of the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship that he lost by a single point to Lewis Hamilton – as if waiting four hours to decide third place in the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix wasn’t enough… The ex-Ferrari driver has been prompted by recent comments from Bernie Ecclestone, who now says that he and the FIA were aware at the time that Nelson Piquet Jr’s scandalous safety car-inducing crash in the Singapore GP was deliberate. The consequence of this shunt, which helped Piquet’s Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso win the race, was a botched pitstop for Massa that dropped him to an eventual 13th place, while McLaren driver Hamilton grabbed third position to help tee up the famous last-lap decider…

WEGGERUK, MY ANKER

RANGE ROVER SPORT 3

RANGE ROVER SPORT 3

ETA: Q4 2022 Introducing the third-generation Range Rover Sport, an all-new model bristling with on- and off-road tech, redefined levels of cabin luxury and an almost completely hybridised engine line-up, all packaged within pebble-smooth, yet square-jawed minimalism. An already long-admired nameplate has been dipped in another high-gloss, high-cost coat of desirability. Many carmakers pepper new vehicle surfaces with croissant-like creases and folds, some even going full Crinkle Cut. Refreshingly, Land Rover is boldly pressing on with what chief creative officer Gerry McGovern calls “reductive design”. Clean lines, taut surfaces and slimmer details are its tenets. The harmonious result cleverly combines reduced visual mass with added visual intrigue, as evidenced by svelte lighting units and subtle air inlets, flush glazing and even flusher door handles. Beneath its polished-metal super-suit is a 35% stiffer mixed-metal…

‘IT WAS A MISTAKE THAT WAS MEANT TO HAPPEN’

George Michael: Outed Monday, Tuesday 9.00pm C4 “WE MET FOR LUNCH. We had this favourite place that George loved called Cynthia’s, which had this afrocado [avocado with ice cream]. George had a bottle of wine, maybe a bottle and a half, and I went off to do other things. Later, I went home. And that’s when I got the call…” It was 7 April 1998, and Kenny Goss was one of the very first people to get wind of a story that would soon fly across the world. His partner George Michael, pop hit-making machine, global superstar and heart-throb to millions – mostly girls – had been arrested for lewd conduct after exposing himself to a police officer in a public toilet in a park in Beverly Hills. “I went down to the…

There is no good outcome for the BoE Tom Rees and Andrew Atkinson Bloomberg The Bank of England’s governor, Andrew Bailey, signalled last week that “the quickest series of rate rises in four decades may be near an end”, say Rees and Atkinson. But that hardly means the battle against inflation is over. The ongoing worry is that a strong jobs market, and fewer workers, could yet fuel a “wage-price spiral”. And in that context, even good news casts a shadow. New figures show that, while Britain’s GDP continues to trail other G7 economies, efforts to revive sputtering growth have been working. Yet there’s a danger that even an “anaemic recovery” could hamper the Bank’s efforts “to return double-digit inflation back to the 2% target”. It may be a case of be careful…

Should NASCAR ban Chastain’s wild last-corner move?

Should NASCAR ban Chastain’s wild last-corner move?

“The best thing of 2022 in motor racing!” Fernando Alonso spoke for many after Ross Chastain’s ‘Hail Melon’ move at Martinsville – Chastain freely admits he put more thought into naming it than the move itself, which quickly went viral on social media. Part inspiration, part insanity: if you haven’t seen it already, Chastain didn’t lift off, didn’t even brake for Turn 3 on the final lap of the recent NASCAR Cup Series Playoff race, but instead kept his throttle foot nailed to the boards and actually changed up to top gear – traditionally never used at NASCAR’s tightest track. Chastain deliberately drove into the SAFER barrier to rim-ride the turn as fast as he possibly could, and in doing so made the cut for the Championship Four finale last weekend in…

ASSASSIN’S SPEED

@JORDANFARLEY It was only a matter of time until David Leitch directed Brad Pitt in an action movie. The pair met when Leitch was Pitt’s stunt double on Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and their friendship deepened over four more actor/stunt performer team-ups. Then Leitch moved into directing with John Wick and Atomic Blonde, and Pitt, mightily impressed, signed up for a hilarious one-second cameo as The Vanisher in the Leitch-helmed Deadpool 2. “We have a great relationship and we fell back into some great banter, ” Leitch tells Teasers, confirming there was only ever one choice to play Bullet Train’s antihero Ladybug, an assassin we follow onto the titular Japanese Shinkansen and into a screeching succession of fast-paced (300km an hour!) set-pieces. “Brad is the epitome of cool and he’s so good…

My pursuit of zero plastic

My pursuit of zero plastic

Plastic is ubiquitous in the modern world, said A.J. Jacobs in The New York Times, and I wanted to find out if I could spend a day without relying on it. It didn’t go well at all. On the morning of the day I had decided to go without using plastic products—or even touching plastic—I opened my eyes and put my bare feet on the carpet. Which is made of nylon, a type of plastic. I was roughly 10 seconds into my experiment, and I had already committed a violation. Since its invention more than a century ago, plastic has crept into every aspect of our lives. It’s hard to go even a few minutes without touching this durable, lightweight, wildly versatile substance. Plastic has made possible thousands of modern conveniences, but…

As one of our most stylish stars, Millie Mackintosh provides inspiration to many when it comes to fashion. But the podcaster, designer and influencer names one woman she greatly admires for her sartorial flair. When asked whom she would most like to create clothes for, Millie, 33, doesn’t hesitate for a moment: the Princess of Wales. “I admire her feminine but strong style,” she says. “Kate puts together an outfit so well. I particularly love her tonal dressing – it’s the little details, like matching her shoes to the exact colour of the dress.” Millie, who describes her own style as “feminine and bohemian-y”, has changed things since becoming a mother to Sienna, who turned three this month, and Aurelia, 18 months, with husband Hugo Taylor, whom she married on a Sussex country…

Covid emergency ends

Geneva After three years of a pandemic that claimed the lives of an estimated 20 million people, the World Health Organization has officially declared the end of the Covid-19 emergency. WHO officials said, though, that lifting the emergency declaration does not mean the pandemic is over—or that its larger effects will stop being felt. “Covid-19 has been so much more than a health crisis,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “It has eroded trust between people, governments, and institutions, fueled by a torrent of myths and misinformation. It has laid bare the searing inequalities of our world.” The official worldwide count of Covid deaths is about 7 million, but the WHO said the true number should be measured in the 20 million excess deaths since the pandemic began in 2020. THE GREAT O ON THE BIG M

SHE’S spoken out about a lot of things and people usually listen because, well, she’s Oprah Winfrey: the guru of self-help, the magician of inspiration, the wizard of the pick-me-up. And when Oprah talks about matters regarding herself it often helps us to feel a little bit better about ourselves too. The talk-show queen has been open about her traumatic childhood, her weight issues, the grief she felt when she lost loved ones and her health. Last year she revealed she’d had a double-knee operation that’d left her in agony but had ultimately given her a greater appreciation of life. See, her fans said. Oprah is really just like us – she’s getting older, she has aches and pains too. O has never shied away from the subject of ageing. Many women…

Striking design, colourful and eclectic decor and idiosyncratic details make this bistro a mustvisit. All dishes are 100% home-made and seasonal, focusing on excellent local produce. Starters include the simple yet popular oeuf mayonnaise; rillettes, pâtés and terrines. Main courses cover all the bases: sausages with smooth, creamy mash and jus so tasty you might be tempted to lick the plate; steak and frites with sauce Béarnaise; fish of the day;…

Secluded SHIPANDANI HIDE

There are two sleepover hides in the Kruger National Park, and in issue 18 of KRUGER MAGAZINE we showcased Sable Hide. So, when we booked to spend a night at Shipandani Sleepover Hide, we knew more or less what such a sleepover entails. We were pleasantly surprised as this hide is smaller and therefore more intimate. Its location is perfect - on the banks of the Tsendze River, where the low-water bridge is well known for the amazing photographs taken by visitors of elephant standing on the bridge drinking. It can be quite a challenge to cross this bridge to go to the hide. And it so happened that we had to wait patiently for some gentle giants to finish their drinks and showers before we could cross. “Its location is perfect…

Sun king? DeSantis’s plan to turn all the states into Florida

The title of Governor Ron DeSantis’s book, which he is zealously promoting across the nation, is less important than the subtitle. The Courage to Be Free is a forgettable title shared by a volume by actor and gun rights activist Charlton Heston. But the subtitle, Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, unlocks DeSantis’s national ambitions. While former US president Donald Trump labours under the frayed slogan of “Make America great again”, DeSantis is building a case to “Make America Florida” – a phrase that appears on caps, flags and other merchandise. The governor argues that he has made glorious summer in the Sunshine state. If and when he announces a run for US president in 2024, he will claim that he can repeat the formula in state after state across the US. Florida,…

There will be 156 men and the same number of women teeing it up across both courses beginning January 10, before the world-famous NSW takes over as solo host for the final two rounds. CHAOS AT LACE THE PALACE

CAMERA CREW THROWN OUT After being spotted with what looked like a small recording device hidden in her skirt during a walkabout to view floral tributes at Windsor Castle, some believe the Duchess of Sussex may have used the Queen’s death as an opportunity to get more footage for her and Prince Harry’s upcoming Netflix show. However, royal sources have claimed this is incorrect. They insist that any camera crew following the former actress and Harry were the general press pack already in the area. “This is insane and really damaging to her,” rubbishes one source. “Of course she’s not wearing a mic.” ARCHIE & LILIBET STRIPPED OF ROYAL TITLES The Sussexes are said to be fuming after King Charles revealed he has no intention of allowing his grandchildren Archie and Lilibet to be styled…

Now Farley has been tasked with advancing the Ford family legacy of auto disruption and innovation into the twenty-first century by moving the company to the forefront of the industry’s digital future. The steps taken in 2021 to push Ford forward toward this goal, blending the company’s storied history with goals around sustainability and digital innovation, are why Farley is Newsweek’s Auto Disruptors Executive of the Year. Farley has introduced electric vehicles starting with iconic nameplates: Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning and Lincoln Zephyr. Those models can be modified without stops at dealerships. Their connected technologies allow for digital range, suspension and handling upgrades wirelessly. “This digital transformation has ripped its…

Trump and Russia: It was no ‘hoax’

“BOMBSHELL,” screamed the conservative website The Federalist. “The crime of the century,” trumpeted Republican Rep. Jim Jordan. “Who should go to jail for this?” demanded GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. They were among the many allies of Donald Trump who pretended that a new report on the FBI investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia was “Watergate times 10, or 100,” said Jonathan Weisman in The New York Times. The explosive reaction stood in striking contrast to the actual report, the result of a four-year investigation by special counsel John Durham, who in 2019 was tasked by then–Attorney General William Barr with probing possible malfeasance in the Justice Department’s Russia investigation. Durham’s inquisition “produced no startling revelations” and yielded only two acquittals and a guilty plea on minor charges.…

High Score THE FIND: A rare video game still in its original packaging. WHERE IT WAS FOUND: In an attic. On Mother’s Day in 2019, Scott Amos was visiting his childhood home in California to finally clear his stuff out of his mother’s attic. While he was going through the boxes, he came across a shopping bag. Inside it was a Nintendo video game called Kid Icarus that Amos didn’t even remember owning. Judging by the December 1988 receipt, it was most likely a Christmas present that had never been wrapped. Nor had it been opened, which makes this lucky find a huge deal. According to gaming expert Valarie McLeckie, Kid Icarus is a highly sought-after cult classic, and there are fewer than ten known unopened copies in existence: “To find a sealed…

‘HE’S HAPPY IN HIS NEW LIFE, BUT DOES WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF IT ALL WENT WRONG’ His upcoming tell-all memoir will no doubt unleash more bombshells and cause further upset within the Royal Family. But an insider tells Closer that Prince Harry - who is said to have written the book before the Queen’s funeral in September and requested “rewrites” after his return to the UK - feels full of regret, and has reached out to sister-in-law Kate Middleton to beg for her help in healing the deepening rift between him and the family. A source reveals, “Prince Harry feels awful at the way it’s all unfolding with his memoir release, as well as the upcoming docu-series that’s being tied into The Crown. The return of Tory sleaze?

What happened Rishi Sunak faced renewed accusations of Tory sleaze this week as two separate ethics rows engulfed his party. The first involved Tory party chair Nadhim Zahawi, who is under pressure to resign after admitting that he had to settle a dispute with HMRC over unpaid tax during his stint as chancellor last year. According to reports, the settlement required him to hand over a sum close to £5m, which included a £1m penalty. Zahawi described the late tax payment, which was related to his shareholding in YouGov, the polling company he co-founded, as a “careless and not deliberate” error. Labour called for him to publish his correspondence with HMRC. On Monday, Sunak asked his ethics adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, to look into Zahawi’s tax affairs, saying there were “questions that…

Alain de Cadenet 1945-2022

OBITUARY Alain de Cadenet was one of the great privateers in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours, an owner-builder who pursued victory with a line of machines bearing his own name. The Briton, who has died aged 76 after a long illness, ultimately failed to win the race but he always put up a good show on a limited budget – and did it in style. De Cadenet, the entrant and constructor, was a throwback to a former time, the epitome of the plucky British privateer. He ran his cars from a tiny mews garage in Kensington and famously towed one to Le Mans behind his 1928 Bentley Speed Six. He gave another an illicit run down the M4 motorway in Wiltshire in the dead of night to test its…

THE LONG ROAD FOR TOYOTA’S STARLETS

The word ‘Toyota’ written large across the nose of the two cars wasn’t necessarily what it seemed. The presence of the Japanese manufacturer’s name on two Group C machines at Fuji nearly 40 years ago didn’t identify the design so much as offer a pointer to the future. It turned out to be a long and winding future, littered with false dawns and heartbreak. Eventually, though, the marque would find plentiful success at the greatest sportscar race of them all. The Fuji 1000Km round of the World Endurance Championship in October 1983 was ground zero in the story of Toyota’s bid for glory at the Le Mans 24 Hours. No one could have predicted that it would take 35 years for the marque to bag the biggest prize in sportscar racing,…

The couple, who are widely understood to have plotted their exodus from the royal family in favour of the glittering lights of Hollywood, have suffered “setback after setback” in recent weeks. According to reports, several of their projects are in danger of becoming unstuck, including a multimillion-dollar Netflix docuseries and Harry’s long-awaited memoir. It’s been alleged that Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, are desperate to reshoot their footage and rewrite chapters of his book after the Queen’s death – but Netflix and Penguin Random House are said to be pushing back. “These big companies they’ve teamed up with are sick of waiting and are ready to cash in on…

THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES AND THEIR CHILDREN LEAD THE ROLL CALL OF SENIOR ROYALS

One of the most charming images of the day was the arrival of the Prince and Princess of Wales in full regalia at the abbey, accompanied by Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, both dressed immaculately for their grandparents’ big day. It was a picture of formality and tradition underpinned by family unity as the couple gave reassuring smiles to their eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. The Prince, who was to play a significant role in his father’s ceremony, was dressed in the deep-blue silk velvet Garter robe, under which he wore the ceremonial dress uniform of the Welsh Guards in his capacity as Colonel of the regiment. Kate’s mini-me, Princess Charlotte, had been treated to an Alexander McQueen frock But it was his wife and daughter who drew the most attention, with Kate, as…

FIA intervention on porpoising stirs up latest F1 hornets’ nest

FORMULA 1 The row surrounding porpoising in Formula 1 grew in Montreal last weekend when team bosses clashed following the FIA’s first steps towards intervening on the matter. Under the new F1 regulations for 2022 that reintroduced ground-effects, a number of teams have struggled with porpoising on their cars this season, with Mercedes being one of the worst-hit. Following complaints from a number of drivers over the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix event about the safety issues involved, the FIA took action ahead of last weekend’s Canadian GP by issuing a technical directive. The FIA felt it was “necessary to intervene in the interests of safety”, informing teams ahead of the weekend that they would be undertaking a data-gathering exercise by defining “a metric, based on the car’s vertical acceleration, that will give a…

Strange Happenings

Strange Happenings

I remember the first day I came to view the 1920s cottage. It was at the end of a quiet, tree-lined street – although at the time the autumn leaves were falling – but that was long before the three strange happenings occurred. The cottage was in a good residential area not far from the local hospital with great transport links to the north-east of London. It had been pouring with rain when I’d pulled up outside and remembered the estate agent’s words that the cottage did need a little updating. It looked small but, stepping through the hall, I decided it was like a Tardis because it was much bigger inside. It’s nearly impossible to turn on the TV and not see at least one of Greg Berlanti’s shows airing. In fact, over the past few years, Berlanti Productions has had as many as 20 shows on the air at one time — a record-breaking number for a producer and creator. So, it’s no wonder he’s receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on May 23. Still, he never imagined this type of success. After growing up in rural New York, he attended Northwestern University and thought about a career in theater, but wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. “I knew I liked storytelling. In college, I quickly realized that I wasn’t a tenth of the actor as some of my compatriots. I’ve always had a great deal of admiration…

5 Things Scuba Diving Taught Me

IN THIS SECTION Love, Echidna Style Scotland Goes Wild Glowing Ghost Fungus Anne Frank’s Protector DIVING MADE MY WORLD BIGGER. And I remember the moment it happened. I was descending through warm, clear water in Rarotonga, the largest of the South Pacific’s Cook Islands, on my fifth dive. Inexperienced divers are often busy divers, and so it was with me. I double- and triple-checked gauges, was hyperfocused on the feeling of breathing through a regulator, fretted in gear that felt claustrophobic, and used my arms to orient myself in the strange blue expanse, expending valuable energy. Diving is about being calm and measured. I hadn’t learned that lesson yet. But then I looked around and was stunned into stillness. I found myself in an enchanted forest straight out of a Grimms’ fairy tale. Porites,…

When to climb the ladder

When to climb the ladder

Any junior single-seater championship that has attracted 25 drivers onto its grid is clearly doing something right. Even more so when such a strong entry comes at a time of financial hardship. GB3 supremo Jonathan Palmer and his MotorSport Vision team must therefore be congratulated for enticing exactly that many competitors to turn out for last weekend’s opener at Oulton Park. Take a look at those 25 and there is an intriguing mix of backgrounds. Unsurprisingly, a significant number – nine, or 36% – are in their second full year of GB3 competition, seeking to put into practice what they learned in 2022 and progress further in their sophomore seasons. Eight (32%) have previously competed in other European, Asian or American single-seater categories and have been tempted by the GB3 offering…

WACOM ONE R9 700 / takealot.com The rise of really good tablets put a dent in the idea of artists defaulting to Wacom kit for digital drawing work; but there’s no denying the company makes some stellar products, notably its droolworthy high-end Cintiq pen displays. The Wacom One isn't one of those… but it's enough to give dabblers a taste for a considerably lower price. Construction is sturdy. The unit's chunky, resembling a tablet yet to learn the concept of thin bezels. But having all that space around the 13.3in 1920×1080 display makes sense for art: you get something to hold without your fingers getting in the way, space to draw sweeping curves with the battery-free stylus, and a setup that lets you really focus on what you're doodling. Elsewhere, the lack of buttons…

At CPAC, Trump promises ‘retribution’

At CPAC, Trump promises ‘retribution’

What happened Donald Trump showed his enduring grip on the Republican Party’s populist base at the Conservative Political Action Conference last weekend, dominating the annual gathering with an ominous keynote speech in which he vowed to get revenge for Americans who have been “wronged and betrayed” by liberal and Republican elites. “I am your warrior,” he told them. “I am your justice. I am your retribution.” Once a magnet for GOP leaders and presidential contenders, this year’s CPAC was sparsely attended and shunned by many prominent Republicans, including presidential hopeful Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Speakers included Donald Trump Jr., his girlfriend, Kimberley Guilfoyle, and Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump, and vendors did a brisk business in Trump bobbleheads and T-shirts depicting Trump as the Terminator and Superman.…

The reality of summer skin for most of us looks a bit different. The season brings a slew of skin saboteurs: from the afternoon negronis you’ve been sippin’ increasing your risk of photodamage (skin changes caused by sunlight exposure), to the pigmentation that’s appeared thanks to over-excited melanocytes (more on those later), the summer months can spell dermatological disaster. The good news? We’ve recruited the experts to find out why. Skin Set Back ONE TOO MANY Upping the alcohol you consume does your dermis no favours, according to Dr Jinah Yoo, a leading consultant at Sk:n Clinic. “Alcohol deprives the skin of vitamin A,” she explains. It means the hero vitamin you rely on to speed up skin cell turnover will be powerless, leaving you with a dull complexion. Partial to a piña…

HOW BONDS WERE BROKEN

HOW BONDS WERE BROKEN

‘Had it really come to this? Shouting at each other about place cards and hormones?’ Prince Harry’s once close bond with the Princess of Wales appears to have fractured as he reveals private details of her relationship with both him and Meghan. He writes in Spare about how his wife Meghan upset his sister-in-law by suggesting she had “baby brain” in the run-up to their 2018 wedding. Kate had just given birth to Prince Louis when the conversation took place and it is thought to have centred around a disagreement the two women had about bridesmaid dresses for the nuptials. Harry says his wife apologised when the two couples later met for tea, explaining it is how she speaks to her friends. But he claims that William “pointed a finger” at her, saying: “Well, it’s…

PRINCE HARRY ON THE QUEEN, MISSING HIS FAMILY AND HOW DIANA IS LOOKING OVER HIM

‘I love every part of fatherhood. Now I have got two little people who I’m responsible for’ The Duke of Sussex opened up lastweek on his meeting with the Queen, family life with the Duchess, their children Archie and Lilibet, and how his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, is “watching over” them. In an interview with NBC’s Hoda Kotb, the Duke spoke about seeing his grandmother at Windsor Castle ahead of the Invictus Games, saying: “It was really nice to see her. To be able to see her in some element of privacy was nice. I hadn’t had the chance to go back to the UK for a couple of years apart from those two times. One for my grandfather’s funeral and one for unveiling a statue of my mum.” He said Her…

Botstil. Moontlik weens die narkose. “Ek was amper…

Coming back the next year suited Robert Allenby just fine, the Victorian successfully defending the championship under the shade of the enormous Gateway Bridge that rumour has it Greg Norman once hit a golf ball over. The tournament, now named for sponsor Fortinet, then moved further north to the then Hyatt Regency Coolum Resort, before the Gold Coast and RACV Royal Pines Resort took on hosting duties. After a successful stint, January 2022 marked time for the event to return to Brisbane and a Royal Queensland layout that Golf Australia magazine architecture editor and acclaimed course…

EXHAUSTED KING SNAPS ‘DON’T COME BACK’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were allowed to form a key part of the Queen’s funeral – at her wish – but now the buck stops with the King. Having “tolerated” Harry and Meghan’s presence during his mother’s 10-day farewell, the new monarch, 73, has told confidants that “he couldn’t wait to see the back of them”. “This has been the hardest two weeks of Charles’ life. He had to grieve his mother, face the world’s media, shake hands with guests, and all the while he was wondering what his son and daughter-in-law were plotting next,” says a source. “It might sound harsh, but they brought it on themselves, especially with Harry’s memoir looming over them, and Meghan’s threat made just before the Queen died that she could ‘say anything’ about the…

VISIONARY OF THE YEAR

HYUNDAI MOTOR GROUP’S Executive Chairman Euisun Chung isn’t just focused on the cars of today. He’s pushing the company, and its Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands, into the future in several key ways. The company is becoming more vertically integrated, with Hyundai acquiring stakes in many of the companies that supply it with materials and components. It is bringing numerous electric models to market and testing hydrogen fuel-cell powered vehicles. And it has acquired a major robotics company with an eye toward a future in which wheeled devices will move people and things around their homes and workplaces. Those initiatives, which collectively put Hyundai Motor Group at the forefront of disruptive change in the industry, make Chung Newsweek’s Auto Disruptors Visionary of the Year. “From the very start, when my visionary grandfather,…

MEGHAN’S ‘FURY’ AFTER ROYAL FUNERAL SNUBS

The past fortnight has seen sorrow and splendour as the Royal Family and the nation united to mourn the late Queen Elizabeth II, who was laid to rest at St George’s Chapel in Windsor last week. While the adored monarch’s state funeral at Westminster Abbey was an occasion for the grandest of displays – with over 10 military regiments and thousands of members of the public accompanying the Queen’s coffin, resplendent in yellow, red and gold – at the heart of the procession was a family grieving in public. HEARTBROKEN It also marked the first time Prince Harry, 38, and Meghan Markle, 41, had been among all the Royals since they stepped down as working members of the family in January 2020. Raab stands down

What happened Dominic Raab resigned as deputy prime minister and justice secretary last week after an independent inquiry concluded that his treatment of civil servants had, in some cases, amounted to bullying. Having heard from 60 witnesses, Adam Tolley KC upheld two of eight formal bullying complaints levelled against Raab. He concluded that in his previous role as foreign secretary, Raab had acted in “intimidating” fashion with “unreasonably and persistently aggressive conduct”, and that this involved an “abuse or misuse of power”. He also found that Raab’s consistently “abrasive” behaviour in meetings at the Ministry of Justice had been experienced as bullying by some officials, although Raab hadn’t intended to cause distress. In a defiant resignation letter, Raab said that the bar for bullying had been set too low, and warned that…

ALONSO PROVIDES THE SPARKS AS VERSTAPPEN DOMINATES

“It was quite straightforward.” Max Verstappen succinctly summed up his 36th Formula 1 victory, a crushing display from his Red Bull squad in the Bahrain opener to the 2023 season. For the world champion, there was little to worry about over 57 laps of the Sakhir circuit, but the nature of his and his team’s display left their rivals reeling. Because it was all very 2022 – Red Bull in control, Ferrari’s reliability failing, Mercedes badly off the pace – albeit with one new green podium shoot. The start was Verstappen’s only real moment of peril. Ferrari claimed that it had stopped Charles Leclerc from attempting a second soft-tyre flier at the end of qualifying to give the Monegasque, who has clearly retained his searing speed to bother Red Bull over…
