On 31 January, Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka to win the Australian Open women’s singles title for the first time. The next day, in the men’s final, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic to win his first Australian Open championship.
The Australian Open is one of the four biggest tennis competitions each year, which are known as the “Grand Slam” events. The other three are Wimbledon, the US Open and the French Open.
Rybakina, who is 26 and represents Kazakhstan, defeated Sabalenka, from Belarus, in an exciting final. They had both won one set each and in the deciding third set, Sabalenka was ahead three games to zero. Rybakina fought back, though, by winning five games in a row and eventually the match.
