Between 5 and 10 May, China’s president, Xi Jinping visited Europe alongside his wife, Peng Liyuan. The trip was Xi’s first trip to Europe in five years and it was a chance to improve the relationship between China and the European Union (EU, a group of 27 countries that work and trade together).
Where did he visit?
On 6 May, Xi arrived in Paris, France. There, he met French president Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, a part of the EU that proposes new laws. On 7 May, Xi and Macron travelled to the Pyrenees mountains to see the Tourmalet pass, a place where Macron visited his grandmother as a child.
