On 22 June, millions of people in China and around the world celebrated a traditional holiday known as the Dragon Boat Festival. The day, also known as the Duanwu Festival, honours one of the greatest poets in Chinese history, called Qu Yuan. When he drowned in a river in 278BC, people rowed out in boats to search for him. This inspired the Dragon Boat Festival, which takes place each year on the day that Qu Yuan died – the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar.
