POOR eating habits, a lack of exercise and ignorance around diabetes are among the main challenges in fighting the disease in South Africa. But diabetes is not just a local problem. According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 4.2 million adults are living with diabetes. An estimated 45.4% people are undiagnosed. THE family of Nalan Ramsumeran, 61, had to wait nine days to claim his body from a mortuary. This was due to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union’s (Nehawu) strike. This mishap has created serious financial hardship for our pensioners who have received a pittance of an increase this year. Accused denies killing actress

MADODANINA Patrick Mkula has denied killing Ashrika Seeripat. Mkula was testifying last Wednesday during his trial in the High Court sitting in Scottburgh. On July 7 last year, Ashrika, 42, an actress who was unemployed at the time, was found strangled to death during what was initially believed to be a robbery at her home in Kadville Heights, Umzinto. Crash driver fails to appear in court

SHAMEEN Thakur-Rajbansi says the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and police have failed her. After 579 days of being kept in the mortuary of a funeral home, Pastor Siva Moodley was buried at the Westpark Cemetery in Randburg last Thursday. Moodley, 53, the founder of The Miracle Centre in the north of Johannesburg, died on August 15, 2021, after falling ill. Police to compensate man jailed unlawfully

The Durban High Court has ordered the minister of police to compensate a Merebank man after the court found that he had been detained unlawfully for nine months. Neekesh Mangaroo, now 33, was arrested on June 2, 2012 on allegations of murder. He was detained at Wentworth SAPS. At the time, he was linked to the killing of a 16-year-old girl whose body was found in Mango Park, Merebank. When Mangaroo appeared in court, he was denied bail and remained in custody until February 27, 2013, when the murder charge against him was withdrawn. AMLESH Rajcoomar, 42, a singer and harmonium player for the chutney group Nagara Touch, died at eThekwini Hospital and Heart Centre on March 11. Rajcoomar suffered from a heart condition and while being taken to hospital in an ambulance, the vehicle was involved in a collision near Ballito. After the crash, Rajcoomar had to be put on life support. His wife, Suehana Sewpersad- Rajcoomar, 37, said they had unanswered questions following his death.
