7-Zip 7-zip.org 7-Zip is the internet’s premier file-compression tool. You might not think you need it, since Windows can create and extract ZIP files natively, but 7-Zip has many advantages. It supports a huge range of file formats: it will open almost anything you find online, including RAR files that remain popular in some corners of the web. It also lets you browse and extract files from ISO, VDI, VHD and WIM disc images, CAB and MSI installers, and even macOS DMG files. Another strength of 7-Zip is ease of use. Medicine Dr Homer Warner was the first to use computers in the operating room to track real-time blood pressure and heart-rate data – not bad for Utah in the 1950s. Working with hospital engineers to build the data-collecting circuit, he later said of what they built: “I didn’t even know it was a computer.” Two decades later, he created one of the first computerised health-records systems, which not only held patient data digitally in one place, but helped physicians interpret it for treatment. You won’t find better reviews anywhere in Australia! As much as we love seeing AMD bounce back and shake up the CPU market with Ryzen, we can’t help but wonder if the company is prepared for its success. In our review of the 1800X in PCTA 234 we talked about how only the X-series Ryzens had the XFR boost feature, and that the ‘X’ suffix referred to XFR. Because that’s what it said in the reviewer’s guide that was supplied to us. And because we only had the 1800X we couldn’t then see if non-X CPUs had, or didn’t have, XFR. At just twenty bucks, this extender might appear to be amazing value for money. It’s tiny, take approximately one minute to set up, and looks like it has a decent feature set. There’s just one problem – performance is absolutely atrocious. The biggest issue is that this unit only supports the 2.4GHz spectrum; there’s no compatibility with 5GHz networks. It maxes out at 300Mbps in theory, but as you can see from our tests, it didn’t even come close. If you’ve got a router that o ers a 5GHz network, this is definitely not the extender for you. Quantum computers have been proven in theory— now it’s time to get building. That’s the idea behind the University of Sussex’s e? orts to lay out a blueprint to create a machine. By taking advantage of quantum states, these computers will be many orders of magnitude more powerful than existing binary machines when solving certain problems. Microsoft says it will address complaints over the inopportune timing of updates and reboots in Windows 10. Updates are a necessity for adding features and fixing security holes, but machines suddenly rebooting remains a problem despite past efforts to solve the irritation. “We heard back most explicitly that you want more control over when Windows 10 installs updates,” explained John Cable, director of program management at Microsoft. “We also heard that unexpected reboots are disruptive.” According to Microsoft, the Creators Update will allow users to schedule when the updates take place, make changes if the time is no longer convenient, and to pause updates. “The ‘snooze’ capability allows you to pause the update process completely for three days when you need uninterrupted time on your device,” Cable said. “In addition,…

Adobe Fill & Sign iOS and Android – Free Fill & Sign allows you to complete forms and add a signature on your mobile device. It has many of the same features offered in Acrobat: autocomplete of commonly used fields (name, address etc), the option to add an electronic signature and graphics for ticks and crosses to be inserted in boxes. At half the price of a decent router, you’re paying rather high premium to extend your home network with this extender. However, as our results show, it almost doubled the performance at range compared to our base router, showing that in some cases, extenders can be worth their weight in gold. It’s easy to dismiss “research” and “threat reports” by security vendors. Nobody has any idea of the expected life of a network cable. On the one hand, they tend to lie in the dark, perfectly still, for years on end; on the other, suppliers and amateurs alike have been tempted to use solidconductor wires where stranded-conductor is the proper solution, because the former is cheaper. UPDATE DRAMAS Like Jon Honeyball I am also frustrated with Windows Update. When its checking for updates it is actually downloading data. When downloading updates it downloads and also installs them at the same time. While there might be no data downloading it is not “Contemplating its Navel” but installing the updates. I have also noticed that when preparing updates it is actually installing updates that don’t require a restart. Some Windows updates have an annoying habit of disabling audio half way through the update and audio is only restored after restarting the computer. Some updates stop the launching of apps during update. Open apps continue to operate but if closed cannot be restarted until after restart. Wunderlist Windows Store, wunderlist.com Unlike some to-do list apps, Wunderlist favours simplicity – there are options to set deadlines, create sub-tasks and append notes and attachments to tasks, but its strength is quickly noting that you need to do something. Lists can be broken down into different topics, helping to keep work and personal tasks separate, although the default Inbox view shows all tasks in deadline order. As one of the more expensive devices in the roundup, we expected this extender to deliver top-tier performance. Solid state drives are great, but if you need huge amounts of storage and don’t want to spend the equivalent of a small car, spinning pieces of metal still reign supreme. Lacie has taken six Seagate Enterprise NAS 3.5-inch hard drives, slapped them in a Thunderbolt 3/ USB 3.1 enclosure, added RAID support and called it the 6big - because there’s six drives inside and it is big. You know you’re getting old when things that were fashionable when you were young come back into the media limelight. It almost defines you as being unhip to note “it was better last time around”.
