This beautiful 1963-built two-tone 997cc Morris Mini Cooper was first registered in 1964 and converted by Harold Radford Coachbuilders. It is owned by coach-built Mini fan Philip Cowan who recalls seeing one when he was growing up. “When I was a kid a lady in Liverpool had one and I always fancied one. I nearly bought one from a lady in London who had a hatchback and I didn’t end up doing it. We'll meet again at future Mini events With so many Mini and classic car events being cancelled and postponed so far due to Coronavirus, we are hopeful that we Mini fans will be able to drive our Minis and meet up with friends soon. We really feel for event organisers, many of whom put on shows to raise money for charity. For those who make a living by entertaining us we can only hope that they will be able to put on events in the future. The Mini community is likely to support them so that they are able to continue. Mk1 air intake hose Mini Spares now supplies this air intake hose for the Mk1 Mini and variants. Mini Spares claim it to be an improvement on the original design, which was made of a rubber material, wrapped over a wire coil. This version is also composed of rubber but is bonded to a nylon interior membrane for additional strength, which results in a stiffer hose overall. Additionally the wire coil is galvanised. The surface finish of the rubber is smoother than the original and has a slight shine which, they report, dulls once installed. Non-S original length was 45”, with 47” for the S. In 1979 the Mini celebrated 20 years of production. It was an exciting time and the anniversary started Mini birthday celebrations that continue on special anniversaries to this day. I remember the time well and recall looking through newspapers for announcements of the Mini 1100 Special, which was built in celebration. It was the first ever UK Mini with alloys, the first with a vinyl roof and unique body colours and it had a special interior too. It looked good and it was great to see 5” wide Exacton alloys fitted to a production Mini although I always would have preferred BL Special Tuning wheel arch extensions rather than the Innocenti-type arches that were fitted and became known in the UK as Mini Special arches. We are very lucky with our choice of favourite classic car as so many parts are readily available. When compared to many other makes and models of car the Mini is close to the days of production in the range of spares that can still be bought. Body and trim items oft en have the worst availability for classics in general but virtually all Mini panels and trim items are available and still relatively cheap. Smart brightwork will set off any Mini, restored or otherwise and, with the exception of very early wheel arch/sill trim, you can go to a specialist and replace everything. It is probably true to say that basically all Minis will need some new brightwork as it does deteriorate over time but it is nice to…

Until 1969 Minis were fitted with an SU electric fuel pump, mounted just below the tank on the rear subframes on saloons. When the Mk3 Mini came along, in late 1969, it had a mechanical pump mounted at the rear of the engine block, operated by the camshaft – strictly-speaking it is the side of the A-series but it is the rear when application is transverse as in Mini – although the 1275 Cooper S retained an electric pump. Apart from their different power source the pumps differ in that the SU electric pump is a ‘pusher’ i.e. it pushes the fuel from the tank towards the engine and the mechanical pump is a ‘puller’ in that it pulls the fuel from the tank to the engine.
