■ Choose a fine thread that matches your appliqué fabrics rather than your background, changing threads for each piece if necessary. If you don’t have lots of colours to hand, choose a neutral colour that will blend well with all your fabrics.
■ We recommend using a fine, flexible needle such as a milliner’s needle (sometimes called a straw needle). A longer size, such as size 10 or 11, will help with turning under the seam allowance.
■ Only fold under a short length of seam allowance at a time, to help achieve smooth edges as you sew.
