Here in the UK, the American Museum in Britain has a collection of 250 quilts ranging in date from the eighteenth to mid–twentieth centuries. Queen Kapi’olan’s Fan Quilt and the Hawaiian Quilt pictured here are vibrant examples of the dramatic red and white colour combination found in so many heritage quilts. Linda Boynton Arthur sheds light on how this colourway evolved when she wrote about the early arrival of Turkey Red fabric on the islands which was literally pounded on to bark cloth to create red appliqué shapes. In my experience, the term ‘fussy cutting’ usually elicits one reaction or another from a quilter. Some enjoy the technique and think of beautifully intricate quilts pieced from precision-cut sections of fabric. Others detest the thought of meticulously cutting cute, tiny motifs and struggle with the idea of fabric being as holey as Swiss cheese. Others aren’t even sure what fussy cutting actually is. So let’s clear that part up, shall we? Fussy cutting can, indeed, be the act of meticulously cutting cute, tiny motifs and turning perfectly good fabric into some semblance of Swiss cheese. And yes, those perfectly cut tiny motifs can and often do make for some intricate, jaw-dropping quilts. But it can also be far simpler. Have you ever tried to align a fabric print in…

TOOLS AND MATERIALS FRONT FABRIC: The fabric on the front of your project can be a normal quilting cotton. Try to avoid dark colours, textured fabric and highly patterned fabrics, as the motif will not stand out as well. UNDERLINING: This fabric will be used to create the channel for your cording. Using a loose weave fabric, such as cheesecloth or muslin, will enable you to thread the yarn through the channel much more easily. You could also use a quilting cotton from your stash, but you may need to snip small holes in the lining fabric to pass the cord through.
