I was kicked out of school and became an alcoholic and drug addict. I’m not a conventional learner: undiagnosed but probably ADHD and dyslexic. You’re getting the same internals, same controllers and same colour passthrough cameras as the full Quest 3, just with last-gen optics. On paper it should deliver identical image quality to the flagship X-T5 (both have the same sensor and image processor), and that is absolutely the case: the 40MP sensor captures amazing detail, noise is well maintained at all ISO levels, and sharpness is on point across the frame. Hang about, what year is this? It’s 2026, but this retro camera will let you pretend it’s practically any decade you wish thanks to its nifty ‘Eras’ dial. It replicates the look of classic cameras from any decade between the 1930s and today, so if you select the ’60s the 15-second videos it shoots will look like Super 8 (complete with spinning reel sound effects), while the ’80s setting mimics the look of 35mm film. You can adjust the strength of the effect and it even changes the resolution to match: all modes except the 2020s, which ups the quality to 1440x1080, are captured at 800x600. A lienware effectively gave birth to the modern gaming laptop with the original Area-51m of the early 2000s, so bringing the name back for a modern audience carries a lot of weight. The new Area-51 has soft, almost organic curves and a ‘liquid teal’ colour scheme that gives the anodised aluminium lid an iridescent sheen – one that shifts colours in changing light. The RGB lighting is done tastefully, a single strip of LEDs casting a diffused glow over what Alienware calls the Thermal Shelf – essentially a chunky rear ‘chin’ behind the screen hinge that contains ports and cooling kit. BOWERS & WILKINS Px8 S2 When the time came to replace 2022’s Px8 wireless noise-cancelling over-ear headphones, Bowers & Wilkins didn’t exactly start again from scratch. Some significant aspects have been retained, or otherwise lifted from the more affordable Px7 S3 model – in fact, the most obvious changes are visual. The Px8 S2s are slightly more low-profile and slightly lighter than the model they replace, and make a gesture towards ‘design’ in the way the cable is exposed in the aluminium arms. At 310g these are slightly lighter than the headphones they replace, and they stay comfortable for hours at a time. SONY WF-C710N It goes without saying that Sony has plenty of previous when it comes to affordable true wireless in-ears. But here the company may have surpassed itself: even by its own lofty standards, these buds are something special. Nothing’s perfect, of course, so we may as well mention the areas in which the WF-C710Ns aren’t complete front-runners (it won’t take long). The charging case is relatively bulky, and they don’t have especially wide-ranging Bluetooth codec support. STEELSERIES ARCTIS NOVA 7 GEN 2 It’s impressive what you get for your money with the wireless Arctis Nova 7 Gen 2. This is a feature-stuffed and refined evolution from the first generation. It has the same comfy build of previous models, with adjustable and rotating earcups and the option to swap out the cups and band. There’s that ever-satisfying volume wheel, which feels good under your fingers – practical if old-school in its approach. And it’s still lightweight, while feeling fairly robust. Setup is a breeze, with a USB-C dongle there to do the hard work but also an option to pair via Bluetooth or even use a 3.5mm cable. FOCAL BATHYS MG If you thought the Focal Bathys over-ear wireless noise-cancellers were expensive, think again. The French firm has had a good long think about things: it’s developed an all-new magnesium driver and built it in-house, then it’s added a lovely new ‘chestnut’ finish and badged the resulting model ‘Bathys MG’. Oh, and then stuck an even bigger price ticket on it. But don’t imagine the MGs can’t justify that price. They really look the part, and are beautifully built and finished. They have potent battery life, and manage to remain comfortable even if you drain all that power in one sitting. They use Bluetooth 5.2, with aptX Adaptive compatibility and multipoint pairing. MEZE AUDIO 105 SILVA As you can see, these are wired over-ears – and this is not a product category that tends to pile it on where techy features are concerned. In fact, the 105 Silvas have just one significant feature, and that’s the way they’re built: in each earcup there’s a 50mm dynamic driver with a cellulose composite dome and titanium-covered surround, and a titanium-coated semicrystalline polymer torus.
