A VERULAM man mauled by pit bulls continues to struggle. Lazarus Appalsamy, 44, from Trenance Park was mauled by his neighbour’s two pit bulls, Sam, 5, and Laeila, 3, while walking home on January 15. A day after the attack, the owner of the dogs euthanised them at the SPCA. Appalsamy’s flesh was ripped off his arms, legs and body. His left eye was damaged and his arteries and veins were damaged in his right arm. Stanley Subbiah, his neighbour and friend, tried to help him but was also bitten. PEAK Street in Westcliff, Chatsworth, could soon have a new name after the eThekwini Municipality held a meeting with stakeholders. Anoop Rampersad, the councillor for ward 77, said there were two roads named Peak Street, which caused confusion. “The one road is in a residential area in Shallcross, while the other is the name of a business precinct in Westcliff. This is a major problem in terms of deliveries that get sent to the wrong addresses or people being incorrectly directed by their GPS to the wrong Peak Street. A Chatsworth mother and her alleged boyfriend have been arrested in connection with the killing of her husband. In November last year, her husband, Bradley Singh, was stabbed to death during an alleged robbery, metres from their home in uMhlatuzana township, Chatsworth. Singh, 38, was on his way to work. He was a machinist for a shoe-manufacturing company in Jacobs. While walking along a pathway to get a lift to work, he was held up and stabbed multiple times in his head and upper body. He was robbed of his shoes, cellphone and lunch bag. He died at the scene. A neighbour found his body lying face-down on the ground and alerted the community, who contacted the police. An online survey has revealed that 59% of magistrates did not think South Africa’s prosecutors were competent. It’s also emerged that 81% of the magistrates believed prosecutors requested postponements too easily. This comes from an analysis of responses from 230 magistrates from across the country to a survey on their perceptions of prosecutors. Magistrates were presented with a series of statements, both negative and positive, that they had to respond to. They were given the option of whether they agreed or disagreed or to say they did not know. The statements included: ‘Prosecutors are respectful of other court users’, ‘Prosecutors ensure justice is done’, ‘Prosecutors are corrupt’, ‘Prosecutors are biased’, ‘Prosecutors are competent’ and ‘Prosecutors request postponements too easily’. CRIME fighter Imran Vorajee was shot in the leg while trying to help his neighbours who were being held up during a home invasion in Asherville on Saturday. Extracted from POST, September 13, 2017 I found my grandfather’s indenture records at the then-University of Durban-Westville (UDW) Documentation Centre. It was an intensely emotional moment. This was my mother’s father, who arrived from North Arcot as a little boy in 1896. On my father’s side, our indenture origins go back much further. The documentation centre focused on recording and archiving material related to South Africans of Indian origin. It was housed in the basement of the UDW library, where it still is. As undergraduate students then, we shunned the documentation centre. It was an apartheid institution, like the Indian university itself. THE trial of Dylan and Ned Govender who are facing charges related to the July 2021 unrest has begun in the Durban High Court. The brothers appeared in court on Wednesday and are facing a murder charge and three counts of attempted murder. Dylan, 29, a graphic designer, and Ned, 30, a mechanical engineer, from Palmview, Phoenix, were released on bail last year. They are appearing before Judge Gregory Kruger and are being represented by criminal defence attorney, Carl van der Merwe. The State prosecutor is Bonginkosi Nelson Mbokazi.
