Two schools forced to close as teachers test positive CHANELLE LUTCHMAN HOURS after welcoming pupils back to class on Monday, two secondary schools in Durban had to close again. Circulars from Apollo Secondary School in Chatsworth and Clairwood Secondary School stated that one teacher at each school had tested positive for the coronavirus. Hours after reopening, Apollo Secondary School closed. The principal found out that a staff member who had been at the school last week with other teachers had tested positive. “Fortunately, the educator was not at school on Monday and was not in contact with any pupils,” said Rowan Hirchan, the chairperson of the school governing body. MEC ‘pleased’ with process CHANELLE LUTCHMAN THE Department of Education in Kwa-Zulu-Natal is satisfied with the reopening of schools so far. This is according to department spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa. He said since Monday, Kwazi Mshengu, the MEC, has been visiting schools. “The MEC is satisfied with operations. Preliminary reports suggest that schools are indeed following health and safety procedures,” Mthethwa said. “While he does acknowledge minor glitches relating to water and sanitation in rural and township schools, safety remains our priority. Mervin Dennis, who is on trial for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme that targeted pensioners, and his daughter, Kerissa Pillay, were arrested by the Durban Serious Corruption Investigation Unit. It is alleged that in 2013, Dennis and Pillay submitted fraudulent claims to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport. “It is alleged that they claimed an amount of R1.8 million for road construction in the Umzikhulu area that was never done,” said Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, a spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) in KZN.
