The question that I hear most often is: ‘Where do your ideas come from?’. And sometimes ideas come from the most unlikely places. Like when my financial advisor asked me, a few months after we went independent, ‘How will you ensure that you keep your team?’ His focus was on risk management, but my head worked differently - by making this an attractive place to be, naturally! And what could inspire and motivate a person more than to spread your wings and travel? And so we started to plan a trip to refill our tanks with ideas once more. DIFFICULTY: easy TIME: two hours It’s quick and easy to turn a piece of builders’ reinforcing mesh into a modern noticeboard. Work in a well-ventilated space: Apply a few coats of a base paint suitable for metal, to prevent the reinforcing mesh rusting and to improve the finish for the spray paint. Allow the base paint to dry properly before applying the spray paint in the colour of your choice. (We used a bright yellow.) Apply several light coats of spray paint to achieve a solid colour and to avoid ‘runs’, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next one. NOTE: Reinforcing mesh (also called rebar, or reinforcing bar) is used to reinforce concrete. Find it at your local builders’ supply store and ask them to cut it to…

We used the petal picture on the page overleaf and had it printed onto linen for a tablecloth. We also printed it out on paper and decoupaged it onto the back of glass plates and the base of wine glasses: Apply modge podge over the back of the plate (or base of the glass) and over the front of the paper printout (so the image will face the diner). Place the wet paper onto the plate or glass and gently rub it with your fingertips to smooth it out and make sure it fills all the hollows and curves of the plate or glass. We first met Joana Caetano on Instagram as a ‘cat lady’ and ‘embroidery artist’ and fell in love with her fresh embroidery work - full of stories and at times tongue-in-cheek, but always with the unmistakable techniques of Portuguese whitework. SPICE-BISCUIT DOUGH: Beat 200g soft butter and 200g brown sugar together. Add 15ml vanilla essence and a large egg and beat well. Mix 420g flour, 5ml baking powder, 10ml mixed spice and 5ml cinnamon together in a separate bowl, then add it to the butter mixture and work it gently to form a firm dough. Roll out between two pieces of plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. (To make chocolate spice biscuits, replace 30g of flour with cocoa.) Makes about 6 large biscuits. The hardest part most likely will be finding three bicycle wheels that are the same size (ask your cycling friends or local bicycle shop if they can help). LIGHT DIFFICULTY: easy TIME: two to three hours, plus drying time YOU WILL NEED ♥ plastic funnel ♥ tile picture on these pages ♥ newspaper, torn into strips ♥ white paint ♥ gold leaf and size (gold-leaf glue) ♥ wood glue ♥ craft brushes ♥ plastic wrap Cover the funnel with plastic. Dilute the wood glue with water, paint it over a strip of newspaper and stick the paper onto the funnel. Glue on more strips until the funnel is covered. The strips must overlap. TOMATO-AND-HERB PASTA SAUCE This rich, fragrant home-made tomato-and-herb sauce is a true Italian classic. Makes: 2-3 jars Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 45 minutes ♥ 25ml olive oil♥ 1 medium onion, chopped♥ 3 cloves garlic, crushed♥ 2 x 425g cans Italian plum tomatoes♥ 25g tomato paste♥ 10ml dried Italian herbs♥ 10ml sugar♥ handful of fresh basil, thinly sliced 1 Heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the onion over a low heat until soft. MERMAID DOLLS Print our mermaid pictures onto fabric and make gorgeous dolls with them. It’s (almost) spring in the Boland, but we wish we were in Portugal! The Ideas team’s European inspiration tour has made us long to pack our bags and fly away to sit on a foreign beach and gaze at the colours. To satisfy our wanderlust, we are welcoming spring with a balmy Portuguese theme of deep bluegreen sea tones and tiled streets. We worked with three elements: colour, plants and tiles. The wall colour is Plaasdam from our Karoo collection.
