A FEMALE SA Post Office employee, Boichoko Segone, 29, made a brief appearance before the Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court on a fraud charge after allegedly withdrawing a client’s money illegally from a Post Office bank account. Segone was arrested by the police after the client opened a criminal case. She was released on bail of R500 and the case was remanded to May 15. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said it is alleged that Segone illegally withdrew the money from a Post Office bank account during September and October 2022. “The client opened a case in December 2022 and the female was arrested. THE NORTHERN Cape Hawks’ Priority Crime Special Investigation unit secured a preservation order of more than R100 000 against a 48-year-old man, Luyanda Nokhele, after he was found in possession of a large amount of cash during a stop-and-search operation in Springbok. Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said the operation took place in August 2020. “The Hawks managed to secure the preservation order on Monday, April 24, 2023. The order was granted by the Northern Cape High Court. The order emanates from an incident that took place in August 2020 where the accused, who was walking down the street, was found carrying a bag containing R100 300 after he was stopped and searched by the Springbok police. CHILDREN and youths from the Mzansi community centre in De Beershoogte, Barkly West, unveiled a mural and film that they produced in commemoration of Freedom Day on April 27. The project is a collaboration between South African-based non-profit organisation Building A Future (BAF) and the non-governmental organisation Cup of Color Building A Future, which is based in Switzerland, and utilises art to inspire change. THE ABSA Wildeklawer sports tournament is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the South African schools sporting calendar, and this year’s edition promises to be an absolute cracker when it kicks off on Friday for the High Schools. This year will be the 13th year that this prestigious event will be held at the Diamantveld High School. A total of 102 schools from across the country will take part, with 182 teams currently practising for this tournament and 4 325 players are hoping to give it their all during the event. THE HOLPAN community near Barkly West has been left frustrated after the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) gave the miners that had encroached on their properties the “thumbs up” and even renewed their mining permits. The community had laid a complaint with the DMR about safety concerns and the environmental impact of the mining activities in the area. The community started raising the alarm when the miners, from three different companies, started digging close to their homes and also digging up local graves and the main road. The community complained that the miners dug up the entrance road to Holpan, while all the dust from the mining activities has taken a negative toll on community members’ health. FOR THE first time ever, a sanctioned 3D archery event was held in the city, and archers from across the Northern Cape took part in what turned out to be a highly successful competition when the Kimberley Adventure Archery Club played host to the African Bow Hunting Organisation’s 3D Leg 1 competition at the Kimberley Big Hole Driving Range. The event organisers received praise for the challenging setup of 20 3D animals placed at different distances and sections of the bushes at the driving range. Bucks, pigs, a leopard, and even a crocodile were just some of the model animals archers had to shoot at with only one arrow per target. THE SPEAKER of Nama-Khoi Municipality, Rodney Krtizinger, has raised the alarm over the threat of a possible nuclear spill on the R355 road between Springbok, Gamoep and Vaalputs. The gravel road is used to transport radioactive material from Koeberg and Pelindaba nuclear facilities to the Vaalputs Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility, which is located about 100km south-east of Springbok in the Northern Cape. A 42-YEAR-old former SAPS member attached to Provincial Crime Intelligence, Sebastian Johnson, was convicted by the Kimberley Regional Court of defeating the ends of justice. Northern Cape Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said that Johnson was arrested after evidence was obtained that pointed to him being a mole who worked with criminals by tipping them off about upcoming operations. “During April 2021, the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team members conducted an operation to arrest members of a drug syndicate. After the arrests, cellphone records of the syndicate were downloaded for further investigation. The team discovered confidential pictures of the planned operation documents on the suspects’ cellphones. THE SOL Plaatje University (SPU) student representative council (SRC) president has been placed on temporary suspension following the alleged assault of a first-year student. The accused, Israel Mulovhedzi, was arrested on April 23 and appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on April 25. It is believed that the student who was allegedly assaulted proceeded to lay criminal charges despite attempts to persuade her not to open any charges. IN WHAT has come as somewhat of a surprise, one of the local schools that was not invited to the 2023 Absa Wildeklawer Sports Tournament is Northern Cape High School (NCH). The DFA managed to speak to the head of rugby at Northern Cape High School, Deon Carney, who said that their teams are very disappointed that they were not chosen to be part of the 2023 Wildeklawer. “We are very unhappy about not being chosen,” Carney said. “We know we didn’t have a great season last year, but our rugby this year has improved so much.
