Dear Wild, A little over a year ago I lost the most influential figure in my life; my teacher, my guide, my best mate, my dad! after a short but tough battle with cancer, dad was peacefully laid to rest. This sudden loss left me and my family shell-shocked and lost. For 12-months we all fumbled and bumped our way through life, and while the pain hasn’t diminished, the loss I still feel every day has changed. LOST MOUNTAINS The tropical island of New Guinea is transected eastwest by a range of high mountains which owe their origin to the active collision between the Pacific and north-moving Australian tectonic plates. In the remote far west of Papua New Guinea (PNG), near the border with Indonesian West Papua, this range narrows to just a single ridgeline which comprises the drainage divide for the entire island, the Star Mountains. The Star Mountains were named from afar by a Dutch military mapping expedition in 1914 but the first attempt to reach the PNG part of the range wasn’t until 1963, by an Australian patrol officer. One of the great coastal walks of New South Wales, the Bouddi Coastal Walk on the Central Coast, is relatively short, well-trodden and is never too far from civilisation. The walk is easy to medium, on well-defined and maintained trails and fire-trails. There are fantastic views along the coast, including several picturesque beaches, rock formations and coastal plant communities. The walk can be broken into several smaller sections with several points at which to gain access. The entire walk can be completed year-round, although this part of the coast is renowned for whale watching between May-July. Even the most remote corners of Antarctica and the Amazon have been reached by modern day explorers. Today’s trailblazing explorers are now largely confined to the exploration of the ocean floor and the subterranean depths of cave systems. While advances in autonomous mapping have opened up even the deepest ocean trenches, no technology has yet been developed to explore caves. Ask any first time tourist arriving from overseas what they want to see while visiting Australia and it is a good chance Fraser Island will be on their ‘must see’ list. Stretching over 120 kilometres long and with over 98 percent of its 1,840 square kilometres of land mass protected as national park, this World Heritage listed area rarely fails to deliver on its reputation. Rising early at 5am, we set out to reach the lookout on the summit of Mount Robert, in New Zealand’s Nelson Lakes National Park. It’s estimated that Australians consume around 25 kilograms of seafood per year, per person, causing demand to outstrip what wild fish stocks can supply.
