I SUBSCRIBE TO THE notion that the modern human is not innately more clever or creative than our ancestors. History is laden with academic and artistic geniuses throughout the ages; Pythagoras, Archimedes, DaVinci, Beethoven, Mozart, and more recent great minds like Newton, Einstein, Hawking, rugby league forwards… Okay, cheap shot, but you get the idea. We impart knowledge over generations and build upon the great work of those who have ventured before us.
Similarly, I believe car designers have always been equally talented, with the occasional genius sprinkled amongst them. Moreover, the critical developments which have determined the evolution of car design are technology and trends, and often the latter is a direct product of the former. Advances in technology became the real design-enablers, liberating designers to explore laterally.
