As the boundaries between formal- and casualwear have blurred, and sportswear has become a luxury staple, hybrid designs have emerged that assimilate a variety of shapes and styles. Staying one step ahead of this synergistic aesthetic is Milan-based label Neil Barrett, whose Tank boots, in a graphic black and white print, bridge the gap between the battlefield and the half pipe. As the flavour profile of cocktails becomes more complex, and ingredients lists start to sound like three-course meals, techniques are developing to bring more culinary raw materials into a liquid state. One such method is fatwashing, which has become a way to beef up beverages without texturally clogging the palate. Bringing all the comforting, rich savour of butter, coconut, peanut butter, bacon fat or foie gras into a glass, the technique pays dues to the perfume industry and its age old methods for extracting aroma from oil with alcohol. It entered the drinks industry around 2007 when Don Lee, of New York cocktail bar PDT, put butter-washed rum and coke together for his Cinema Highball. Louis Vuitton is launching its first series of candles, created by in-house perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud, who also worked on the fashion house’s perfume debut in 2016. The four fragrances, developed to convey the feeling of a gentle breeze bringing the outdoors in, are inspired by seasonal landscapes discovered by Cavallier Belletrud during his travels: L’Air du Jardin distills a Provencal garden filled with May roses in spring, Ile Blanche is all sea spray and beating sun, Feuilles d’Or is the wet, woody aromas of the forest, and Dehors Il Neige is a snowy landscape infused with festive notes. Water has been an occasional creative motif at Fendi since 1977, when it commissioned the short film Histoire d’Eau to launch its debut ready-to-wear collection for women. The first film made specifically for a fashion brand, it followed the adventures of young American actress Suzy Dyson in Rome, drawing a connection between her exquisitely crafted outfits and the splendour of Rome’s fountains and architectural icons. Peak time SIX SENSES, BHUTAN Thanks to a combination of inaccessibility, exclusivity and a limited tourist quota, Bhutan has long possessed a certain cachet as a destination. The arrival of the Six Senses group in the Himalayan kingdom will only enhance this status. Five lodges, designed by Thai studio Habita Architects in hand-cut stone, timber, bamboo and packed earth, are dotted across a series of lush valleys, the idea being that visitors move from one location to another to discover different aspects of the country. First to open are lodges overlooking the Paro and Punakha valleys and one in Thimphu, the capital; two more, in Gangtey and Bumthang, will open in spring. Mushroom dischi volanti Serves 2 150g dried dischi volanti pasta (or similar)1 tbs olive oil2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely sliced250g mixture of any fresh mushrooms, cut into large piecessalt and pepper2 tbs creme fraiche25g parmesan, finely grated Cook the pasta in boiling salted water, then drain and set aside, reserving a cupful of the cooking liquid. Tea connoisseurs have long known that a superior cuppa depends just as much on the shape of the teapot and cups as it does on the tea leaves. The Paris-based founder of Maison des Trois Thes, Yu Hui Tseng, believes she knows the secret of the perfect infusion. A collaboration with porcelain brand Ruyi has resulted in the Aroma collection of tea accoutrements. ‘An oolong tea will never brew in the same way as a green tea,’ Tseng says. Which explains the varied shapes of the teapots in the collection, each designed to control oxygenation, moisture and temperature according to the tea leaf being brewed. Opening next month at Amsterdam photography museum Foam, ‘Feast for the Eyes’ offers a rich history of food photography, from 19th-century still-lifes and vintage cookbooks to conceptual art. Less sexy are their compact urban counterparts whose ‘all-inclusive’ business models make amenities, not architecture, the heart of the sell. While touting a tiny footprint, micro-apartments are increasingly competing on micro-luxuries. Who needs bike racks, free gyms and laundry facilities when New York’s Carmel Place is offering Hello Alfred butler services? Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, microflats come equipped with ultra-short-throw home projectors that transform small walls into big screen TVs. Horological heroes of the hour In 1969, unique ‘snowflake’ hands began to appear on Tudor’s Submariner diving watches. Today, the wide hands, resembling a magnified snowflake particle, are a powerful graphic signifier of a Black Bay, the brand’s biggest-selling design, and of Tudor’s wider resurgence. Others in the ‘snowflake’ series include the Black Bay Fifty-Eight and this year’s Black Bay GMT. The Pelagos steel bracelet models also take the snowflake hands, but the Black Bay owns them, so to speak. This quirky detail has been singled out as a mainstay of Tudor’s contemporary offering by Rolex and Tudor CEO Jean-Frederic Dufour, whose vision chimes with that of Hans Wilsdorf, who established Rolex in 1905. The Danish-Vietnamese artist Danh Vō has been described as a ‘hunter gatherer’, drawing widely on disparate historical events and artefacts, and infusing them with an element of autobiography. He has found inspiration in Greek and Roman sculpture, medieval weaponry, the ordeals of Christian missionaries in Indochina, the Statue of Liberty, and the personal letters of Henry Kissinger, each time finding themes that endure across cultures and epochs. So it’s fitting that Hong Kong’s M+ Pavilion has invited him to pay homage to the late Isamu Noguchi in an upcoming show, ‘Counterpoint’. ‘Visitors have told us that, although it is a big house, you never feel lost in it’ Husband and wife architects, Florian Baier and Nina Baier-Bischofberger, are both highly skilled parametric designers. But, unlike other parametricists, their mathematics tends to mirror nature’s geometries, which means that Baier Bischofberger Architects aim to make buildings that are not alien spaceships within the landscape, but rather form a liveable part of it. Their latest completed project is a family house near their hometown of Zurich. The property is in Mannedorf, on the edge of Lake Zurich. ‘House l iving in the sky’ – that was the working concept for The Great Room in the show apartment at Hong Kong’s 8 Deep Water Bay Drive, developed by the Nan Fung Group and Vervain Resources. A multifunctional, formal space designed for entertaining, the room offers breathtaking views of the emerald slopes of Mount Cameron. ‘We wanted to maximise the light, airy feeling of living at elevation – to provide all the benefits of apartment living with the privacy and seclusion of a detached house,’ says the property’s interior designer Alexandra Champalimaud. There was a soupcon of the psychedelic on parade at Stella McCartney, Prabal Gurung and Pringle of Scotland this season. Scattered among the Argyle knitwear synonymous with the latter, and alongside colourful ensembles inspired by football fan apparel from the 1980s, was a smattering of tie-dye offerings in the resort collection. The trippy pattern of this dress may be decidedly hippy, but its wibbly stripe details are based on the design of a vintage Pringle jersey. For a brand that prizes longevity over novelty, Vipp has had a prolific decade. Originally a manufacturer of pedal bins and bathroom accessories, the Danish firm made an entry into the kitchen market in 2012, with a modular, stainless steel design that can be taken out and travel with the owner if they relocate (W*157). Alongside came a tableware collaboration with Danish ceramicist Annemette Kissow, marking Vipp’s first experiments with ceramics and glassware. Then there was a prefabricated shelter, launched in 2015 – a steel cabin with floor-to-ceiling glass living areas, a kitchen, bathroom and loft bedroom (W*191) – followed by a lighting collection. Porta Volta is where contemporary Milan seems to come together. The dramatic new architecture of Herzog & de Meuron’s glass temple for Fondazione Feltrinelli sits beside the ornate 1880 Porta Volta toll gates and dominates Chinatown’s pedestrianised main drag, while a long-established Chinese population now interweaves with a trendy new youth contingent. The area is fast becoming one of Milan’s most dynamic – a perfect location, then, for a luxury goods entrepreneur to make his base. A converted auto-repair garage, this loft faces another, still active, auto-repair shop across the courtyard. Portugal’s rural Alentejo region, best known for its wide plains punctuated with whitewashed medieval hilltop towns and olive groves, is now home to a unique, art-filled boutique hotel, Da Licenca. It comes courtesy of Victor Borges and Franck Laigneau, who met 12 years ago in Paris, where Borges worked as director of textiles and silk at Hermes, and Laigneau as a gallerist. The pair came across the site, a cluster of 19th-century former agricultural buildings, while searching for a holiday home in Borges’ native Portugal. Arriving as the fierce Alentejano sun set on the surrounding cork, fig and olive trees, they fell in love with the place. One beautiful evening in Venice, German artist Katharina Grosse came across a small restaurant called Alla Vedova (at the widow’s). Thinking immediately of Emilio Vedova, the late Venetian painter who had seen abstraction as a gateway to political freedom, Grosse imagined being invited to his table. ‘We had a lot of Venetian specialities that night, but nothing was like the dark purpleblack inky, velvety linguine.’ The aftermath bore a delightful resemblance to Vedova’s work – energetic, expressive brushstrokes on largely monochrome canvases.
