The installation conjured up the innocent thrill of swings and roundabouts, controlled velocity – though some of Baas’ designs were far from innocent. The passing of time, together with the tipping point between childhood and maturity, are concurrent themes in Baas’ work. ‘Forever Young’ responds to ‘a relentless desire’, explains the designer. ‘As a child you want to grow up, and as an adult you want to stay young. See the finished exhibition piece on page 184 Olivia Lee’s longevity-themed collection of four objects is both a meditation on the mythology of wellness and a work of supreme artisanship, courtesy of Lee’s fabrication partner Nature Squared. The collection’s marquee piece is the ‘Elixir’ cabinet. Part medicine cabinet, part room divider, part dresser, it takes its cues from the traditional Chinese screen. But Lee’s elaborate design transforms and updates it with intricate, gorgeously rendered inlays of brass, pearl and shells, as well as teak and feather flourishes. It features compartments for what Lee calls ‘modern-day elixirs’, the secret serums and potions that promise to prolong youthful appearance. This gable-roofed red brick structure, built in 1837, has been home, since 1993, to Nikari, a maker of high-quality sustainable wood products. Its catalogue encompasses some of the most celebrated names in Nordic design – from Alvar Aalto and Kaj Franck to Louise Campbell and Claesson Koivisto Rune. A love of great white sharks spurred designer Beatrix Ong to sign up for an international marine volunteering programme in 2017. Ong, sustainability advocate and erstwhile creative director of Jimmy Choo, spent four weeks with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust in South Africa, learning about her favourite species but also rehabilitating wildlife that had suffered as a result of pollution. ‘It made me realise that humans are affecting the oceans in a drastic way. It’s one thing to look at data on plastic pollution. It’s now over nine years since we first carefully crammed a brimful of one-off designs into Brioni’s Milan HQ, introducing an unsuspecting audience to what is now a must-see fixture at Salone del Mobile. Even we were a little shocked and awed by what we pulled off with that inaugural Wallpaper* Handmade exhibition: a showcase of 76 unique collaborations that mixed and matched designers, makers and manufacturers from around the world. When Ido Garini hit on the idea of designing a ‘teabag’ for the bath, he wanted to make sure his creation was sustainable. So, with the help of Laufen, he created a caddy and some accompanying accessories using stainless steel and Corian. We then tasked Quinteassential, an expert in the therapeutic qualities of herbs, to create three blends that soothe and salve as you soak in the tub: Focus (with centring Japanese sencha, lemon verbena and sweet passion flower herb); Refresh (smoky Yunnan pu-erh, cedar wood and basil); and Breathe (mediative Chinese oolong with sandalwood). Nicola Hart, a London-based film writer, director and producer, came across water kefir when researching superfoods with her friend, the chef Sam(antha) Clark of Moro fame. She was soon in its thrall. ‘Inspired by the rebirth of the art of fermentation, we looked into water kefir as a way to preserve the goodness and enhance the quality of unprocessed food,’ says Hart. Water kefir is now a favoured fermented quencher in the arsenal of the fit-and-fine fettled. Though a relative newcomer to this scene, it is said to date back 2,000 years, and originates from the pads of the prickly pear cactus in Mexico. But what the Belgian designer came back with surpassed all our expectations. Lust thought big. ‘At first I reflected on the functional, practical aspects,’ says Lust. ‘Then my train of thought released itself from these very pragmatic concepts and my hand loosened on the paper. Even though our countries sound very similar, Australia and Austria are worlds apart,’ says Emma Aiston, one half of Adelaide-based design duo Daniel Emma, on collaborating with the Viennese horn workshop Petz. For Wallpaper* Handmade, Aiston and her partner Daniel To worked cross-continentally with the workshop’s fifth-generation owner Thomas Petz to produce a collection of five brass-handled horn combs. ‘The time difference worked in our favour. ‘SQUEEZY’ LAMP, BY EDMUND ZHANG Young Singapore-based designer Edmund Zhang spent days researching the therapeutic benefits of squeezing before creating this LED desk lamp for a Wallpaper* competition held in the city-state. His winning design gets brighter with every squeeze, before gradually dimming to a pleasing glimmer. We’ve since partnered Zhang with Italian lighting maker Slamp to create another lamp, currently on show in Singapore at our Handmade On Tour exhibition, at Gillman Barracks until 26 August. Their response to our theme of Wellness + Wonder was predictably unpredictable, combining the very Milanese concept of the aperitivo with Japanese tea ceremonies, woven together – in this case quite literally – by Christopher Farr’s long experience at the cutting edge of textile design. ‘Ceremony’, as the final product came to be called, comprises an ultramarine rug, supported by aluminium armatures so that each end becomes half-rug, half-chair, plus a matching side table that also functions as a storage unit or ice bucket. French-born designer Marlène Huissoud has always experimented with the natural world. Her early projects, developed as part of her Material Futures master’s at London’s Central Saint Martins, grew into a series called From Insects, which used various bugs and larvae as ‘collaborators’ in the creation of new materials. Since graduating in 2014, she has been looking at the contribution bees and silkworms can offer the design world. ‘It all started with my family’s background,’ she says. ‘I grew up in the French Alps around my father’s beehives, and I have always been fascinated by the creativity of insects.’ Huissoud is on the roster of London design gallerist Sarah Myerscough, a champion of highly-skilled artisans who celebrate the organic. Tasked with amplifying the virtues of Nuori’s facial oil and cleanser, Ionna Vautrin used soapstone, which has temperature-retaining qualities and a soft finish, to create two massage tools. Featuring Vautrin’s signature curves, the tool kit also includes a set of leather and goats’ hair brushes, as well as a soapstone tray and mirror. This set reflects Le Gramme’s ability to elevate clean design beyond the purely minimal. Promoting a meditative start to the day, it comprises a lava-stone tray and five crystal vessels – ramekins for vitamin pills and dried fruit, a tumbler, and a water glass and jug – all produced by Lobmeyr. Nodding to Adolf Loos’ 1930s pyramid-cut crystal drinks set for Lobmeyr, the healing set is in hand-blown cut glass, with a pyramid guilloché pattern first used by Le Gramme in its early silver bracelets. The glassmakers of North Bohemia, in particular, are embracing the newly rich design scene. Manufacturers around traditional centres, such as the small towns of Nový Bor and Kamenický Šenov, are revitalising glass production and design.
