I’m pretty confident in my personal design decisions—I know what I like and don’t like— but recently I had one of those “What have I done?” moments. After painting my hallway a bold, bright color, I realized that I hadn’t taken into account a couple of external factors, particularly the way different types of light would alter the shade. Sure, I had done my due diligence, painting large test swatches and examining them throughout the day and evening. But the glow of a new light fixture installed after the fact dramatically changed the space’s hue after dark. What had been a pretty apple green during the day turned a garish shade of chartreuse at night. To keep the harshness at bay I had to dim the fixture to its lowest…

MOUNTAIN BROOK, ALABAMA—particularly Old Mountain Brook, as it is known locally—is filled with stately 1920s Georgian Revivals, English Tudors, and Federal-style architecture.
