Indian Railways, which ordered an inquiry after a freight train travelled 43 miles without a driver. The 53-carriage train’s driver disembarked at a station in Jammu during a crew change. The train then set off by itself down a slope and gathered speed, hitting 62mph. It was eventually stopped by blocks laid across the track. Shamima Begum’s hopes of returning to the UK from her detention camp in northeast Syria have been dashed again, said Haroon Siddique in The Guardian. Last week, three Court of Appeal judges ruled unanimously that Sajid Javid, as home secretary in 2019, had acted lawfully when he revoked her citizenship on grounds of national security. The court left it to others to judge whether it had been a harsh way of treating someone who may have been “influenced and manipulated” to run off to Syria as a 15-year-old schoolgirl to join Islamic State, merely ruling that the decision had been procedurally fair. And both follow hard on the heels of the second series of Jon Ronson’s Things Fell Apart. John Singer Sargent was an artist who “clearly loved clothes”, said Francesca Peacock in Prospect. His world “was one of lavish haute couture and costumed dress”: an in-demand painter of society portraits, Sargent (1856-1925) specialised in likenesses “of society beauties in miles of silk” and “serious canvases of serious men” – themselves often no less lavishly attired. An eminent lawyer and a minister in the Mitterrand government, he equalised the age of consent for same-sex relationships (from 18 to 15), and held a series of major positions: he was the president of the commission set up to resolve legal issues arising from the dissolution of Yugoslavia; he was also the honorary co-chair of the World Justice Project. But he was best known at home and abroad as the man who abolished the death penalty in France, at a time when most French people supported it. His death marks “the passing of a consummate dealmaker”, and one of the UK’s most prominent philanthropists and champions of the arts. Around £4.7bn that would have been spent bringing HS2 to Manchester and Leeds will be used to fund transport projects in rural areas, towns and small cities in the north of England and the Midlands, the Government announced this week. Paris Tower strike: Staff at the Eiffel Tower went on strike for six days last week, forcing the closure of the landmark and disappointing an estimated 100,000 visitors to the French capital. Unions said that Paris City Hall – which owns 99% of the firm that operates the tower – had overestimated revenue from ticket sales, and underestimated the cost of necessary repairs to the wrought-iron structure. Two drugs hailed as a turning point in the fight against Alzheimer’s can cause brain shrinkage, scientists have warned. Lecanemab and donanemab have been shown to slow the progress of the disease and are being evaluated for use in the NHS. But side-effect data shows that, in some cases, patients’ brains have shrunk, said The Daily Telegraph, with those on the highest doses losing up to three teaspoons’ full, according to Dr Madhav Thambisetty, of the National Institute on Ageing in the US. Eleanor Fazan 1930-2024 Eleanor Fazan, who has died aged 93, was 15 when her mother arranged for her to be trained by Ninette de Valois at Sadler’s Wells. She was a talented dancer, but later, she could not imagine how this had come about, as she lived in Kenya, and de Valois had never seen her perform. Regardless, she left her home in 1945 and sailed from Alexandria to London on a troop ship. Left largely to fend for herself in the capital, she studied ballet for some years before deciding she’d be better suited to life on the chorus line. The UK’s energy regulator, Ofgem, has announced that the price cap will drop by 12.3% in April, following a fall in wholesale gas and electricity prices. It means that, for the average household in England, Wales and Scotland, bills will drop by £238 a year to £1,690. That is the lowest level since March 2022, but still higher than in the winter of 2021, when prices began to surge. Falling fuel prices have also helped cause food price inflation to slow to 5%, its lowest rate in two years.
