Water companies: dirty business “After months of anger over sewage and waste” – not to mention “well-paid bosses and dividend-hungry owners” – Britain’s 16 private water suppliers submitted their business plans for the next five years to regulator Ofwat this week, said Alex Lawson in The Observer. The “twice-a-decade” price review, determining who will stump up what to fix the UK’s ancient leaky pipes, has rarely been so politically charged. Paris Bedbug panic: Pressure has been mounting on the French government to tackle a so-called plague of bedbugs in Paris and other cities, in advance of next summer’s Paris Olympics. Emmanuel Grégoire, the deputy mayor of Paris, has requested “urgent” action to address the problem, while the transport minister has summoned bus and train operators to “inform them” about how to stop bedbugs multiplying on seats. The Dangerous Dogs Act is often seen as a classic example of a bad law, passed as a kneejerk reaction to shocking headlines. But computer scientists have warned that AI-powered chatbots are already causing significant spikes in water usage – which will only increase as people become more dependent on such technology. The amount of water used by server farms to counteract the heat generated by their computers has long been of concern to environmentalists. AI requires vast amounts of computer power – which means more water will be needed. More than 10% of women and 8% of men aged 16 to 24 say they are gay or bisexual, according to the ONS’s annual population survey for 2022. In 2017, the figure for women in that age group was less than half that, at 4.8%; for men, it was 3.8%. Among people aged 65 and over, 0.7% identify as gay or bisexual. A third of house hunters in London will look at homes more than ten miles away from their current address; as will 42% in Oxford. By contrast, in Birmingham, only 18% of buyers look that far, while in Liverpool, just 11% will, according to data from Zoopla. Water companies in England and Wales plan to invest a record £96bn in water and sewage networks over the next few years, and to pass the cost onto consumers via higher bills, according to proposals submitted to the regulator Ofwat (see page 41). The plans envisage bills gradually increasing from 2025 to 2030, until customers are paying an average of £156 a year more for their water than they are now. The typical annual water bill in the UK is currently around £448. Among other things, the money would be spent on work to reduce overflow spills and leaks, new pipes to transfer water from the wetter north to the drier south and the construction of ten reservoirs. A Stone Age structure from wood The remains of what may be the world’s oldest known wooden structure have been found in Zambia.
