In the UK, we have “plausibly had more immigration in the past two decades or so than in the previous 2,000 years combined”, said Nick Timothy in The Daily Telegraph. Every PM since 2010 has been elected promising to bring numbers down. Every one has failed. In the year to last June, net migration reached “an unprecedented” 504,000. This week’s new net figures for the whole of 2022 were expected to be even higher: over 700,000, possibly as much as one million. Since Brexit, migration from the EU has gone into reverse. Ravenna, Italy Flood chaos: Severe floods struck northern Italy last week, killing at least 14 people and forcing more than 36,000 to evacuate their homes. Towns west of Ravenna were emptied. Across Emilia-Romagna and parts of the Marche, six months’ worth of rain fell in 36 hours, on ground rendered impermeable by months of drought. Nearly two dozen rivers burst their banks, roads turned into rivers and huge tracts of farmland were submerged. Thousands of livestock have died and an estimated €1.5bn-worth of crops have been destroyed. In hillier areas, there were more than 300 landslides, rendering many towns and villages inaccessible for days. A year after he became chief minister of Gujarat, a train carrying Hindu activists through the state was set on fire, allegedly by a crowd of Muslims. Fifty-nine people died. Obese patients cost the NHS more than twice as much as people of healthy weight, a study at Imperial College has found. Whereas each healthy weight person costs the NHS £638 a year on average, researchers found that the service spends £1,375 a year per obese patient. It means that if everyone was of a healthy weight, the NHS would save £14bn a year. However, the true cost of obesity is likely to be higher, as these figures do not take into account the impact of people being off sick for long periods. Obesity makes people vulnerable to a range of health problems including diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Russia’s most precious icon — The Trinity, painted by Andrei Rublev in the 15th century — is to be handed over by President Putin from the state to the Russian Orthodox Church, says Pilar Bonet in El País. It was confiscated from the Church by the Bolsheviks in the 1920s, and had hung in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. What happened Rishi Sunak threw a lifeline to Suella Braverman this week, by deciding that the Home Secretary should not face an official probe into allegations that she had breached the ministerial code last year. After being caught speeding in June 2022, Braverman had requested that civil servants arrange a one-to-one speed awareness course for her. Concerned that they were being asked to involve themselves in her personal affairs, in a potential breach of the code, civil servants declined her request. There had been speculation that she might be forced to resign, but the PM said that having consulted his ethics adviser, Sir Laurie Magnus, he was satisfied that there had been no breach. Millennials and Gen Z are less religious than previous generations – yet they are significantly more likely to believe in hell than Baby Boomers. Overall, only 41% of Britons now believe in heaven, down from 57% in 1981, according to data from the World Values Study. But belief in hell has remained consistent, and currently stands at 26%. Broken down by age, 32% of under-40s believe in hell, whereas only 18% of 59- to 77-year-olds do. Younger people are also more likely to say they believe in life after death. The survey showed that 49% of Britons believe in God, down from 75% in 1981. Only five of the 22 countries surveyed (Norway, South Korea, Japan, Sweden and China) came lower on that table. Sinn Féin secured control of six of Northern Ireland’s 11 councils in this month’s local elections. The better-than-expected result means that it is now the biggest party in local government, with 144 council seats – up 39 on 2019. Last year it emerged as the biggest party in an assembly election for the first time. The DUP came second, with 122 seats, unchanged from four years ago. The cross-community Alliance Party won 67, up 14. Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill said its gains reflected frustration at the DUP’s boycott of power-sharing, which has paralysed Stormont and prevented her from becoming First Minister. Edmonton, Canada Wildfires rage: Massive wildfires continued to rage in western Canada this week. In the worst-affected province, Alberta, the blazes have forced more than 30,000 people from their homes, and burned two million acres of land. A state of emergency was declared on 6 May and fires have also broken out in neighbouring British Columbia. Smoke from the fires has spread up to 2,000 miles, creating a haze in the sky in northern US states, including New York, Illinois and Iowa, that turned the Sun a startling shade of red. The tax hike the Tories are hiding from us Liam Halligan The Daily Telegraph Imagine the political storm were Rishi Sunak to hike the basic rate of income tax from 20p to 24p in the pound, says Liam Halligan. Yet amazingly, the Government is launching a tax raid of just that size on middle-income employees by freezing personal tax thresholds for the next five years. It will drag millions more people into the 40% tax bracket – a “tax band designed for the seriously well-paid”. In the early 1990s, just 3.5% of UK adults paid income tax at the higher rate. A warning about sweeteners Replacing sugar with aspartame and other artificial sweeteners does not help weight loss in the long term – and may raise the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the World Health Organisation has concluded. Rather than switching to non-sugar sweeteners (NSS), it says that people should be aiming to use raw or lightly processed fruit with naturally occurring sugars as their source of sweetness, while also trying to reduce their taste for sweet foods, ideally from early on in life. The Welsh-born painter Gwen John is generally remembered as a “fragile”, isolated figure, said Mark Hudson in The Independent. Neglected for some time after her death, John (1876-1939) was rediscovered in the 1980s, when she was reassessed as a reclusive talent overshadowed by two “bombastic male egos”: her brother, the celebrated painter Augustus John; and the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin, with whom she pursued a doomed romance for a decade. Tiger-spotting in India This year is the 50th anniversary of India’s Project Tiger, launched in 1973 to save the big cat from extinction. At that point, there were 1,827 tigers left in the wild in India, down from 40,000 in 1900. Today, there are 3,167 – so the project has not been a huge success, says Chris Haslam in The Sunday Times, but it has made a difference. The presence of humans in tiger reserves has been much reduced, by relocating villagers and banning tourists in many areas. As a result, your chances of spotting a tiger are limited. Political donations, after an Egyptian-born billionaire gave £5m to the Tory Party. Mohamed Mansour said he had faith in Rishi Sunak to achieve economic growth. A hospital in western Germany has expressed regret after it emerged that one of its surgeons used a cleaner to assist in a toe amputation. The incident occurred at Mainz University Hospital in 2020, but has only recently been revealed. The surgeon decided to go ahead with the procedure, although no qualified assistant was available. When the patient, who had received a local anaesthetic, became restless, the doctor asked a nearby hospital cleaner to hold the man’s leg and pass surgical instruments. There were no complications, but the surgeon has since been fired. A stolen car somehow ended up balanced on a metal drum in the middle of a roundabout in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway. What follows is Joe’s account of the production, with every aspect of the process described in detail, from the absurd behaviour of the leading actors (one insists on sleeping in a tent) to the “ruthless euphemisms of Tinseltown”. Richard Avedon at Hamiltons Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was always fascinated by celebrity, by postwar glamour, and by the ways in which they came to dominate the media. Often shot against stark white backgrounds, his monochrome portrait images of the great, the good and indeed the questionable were endlessly imitated and remain instantly recognisable. This exhibition, Glamorous, which brings together a selection of his celebrity pictures, is as good an overview as any. It’s difficult to say where the line between portrait photographer and fashion photographer blur with Avedon, but it hardly matters. In the show’s course, we see photos of Tina Turner mid-performance; the model Ingrid Boulting styled as a Pre-Raphaelite muse; and Andy Warhol and his Factory stars captured as if posing for a police lineup.
