The Malabar coast of Kerala is where most visitors head when exploring this part of southern India. The tranquil lagoons and lakes, most often seen from the deck of a converted rice barge, are a world apart from the clamour of the cities. This watery existence is reflected in Kerala’s domestic architecture. Homes have generous verandahs to sit and survey the lush vegetation and wildlife, and to be protected from the bright sun, and roofs are pitched to withstand monsoon downpours. Many of the places mentioned here feature land art, a movement that developed in the 1960s and 1970s and which involves using the land itself to make art. Famous land artists include Andy Goldsworthy, Chris Drury and Richard Long, who memorably turned a walk into sculpture, simply by striding back and forth in a grassy field. And that is the joy of it – if you’ve ever added a stone to a cairn on a walk, arranged some pebbles on a beach, made a den in the woods, floated some flower heads on a pond or even simply mown the lawn, then you too have created land art. Long-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus) With its protruding spines, downward gaze and prehensile tail, this most beguiling fish looks like a shy, prehistoric ghost. Floating upright, it hangs motionless waiting for its prey to pass, which it then sucks up through its long snout. Found in seagrass habitats from Scotland to Dorset. Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) Most often seen when masses, known as a ‘bloom’, are washed up on the beach. Which is a shame, as they look most beautiful floating in transparent clusters. Moon jellyfish can grow up to 40cm in diameter and have short hairy tentacles that hang from their dome like a fringe. They are mostly harmless, though may sting sensitive skin. There is something to admire about the stubborn determination of the plants we so disparagingly call ‘weeds’. They insist on choosing their own place to live, in spite of our efforts to discourage them. So, whenever you find yourself kneeling, trowel in hand, ready to rip out those ‘perennial nightmares’, spare a thought for the qualities of these plants, which make them such dogged colonisers of the soil. They are just being themselves, as much a part of the natural world as are you. Learn to love your so-called ‘enemies’, however much pain you think they cause you. Edible forest gardens imitate the tiered structure of natural woodlands, but have a higher proportion of edible species. When creating a forest garden, it is important to ensure enough light reaches the lower layers for healthy plants and maximum yields. The seven primary layers are: 1 Upper canopy The tallest tier is typically made up of standard fruit trees, nut trees and trees that fix nitrogen. Only suitable for large gardens. 2 Sub canopy, or canopy trees for smaller gardens: mid-sized trees, including most familiar fruit trees. 3 Shrubs Bushes that produce berries and plants that attract pollinators and offer habitats for wildlife. 4 Herbaceous plants A perennial layer including some herbs and medicinal plants. 5 Ground cover Low-growing edible and often nitrogen-fixing plants which enrich the soil and help…

1 MAKE To make a plant pot barbecue, take a clean terracotta plant pot (this is from waitrosegarden.com, 35cm wide x 29cm high, £11.49), and line the base with 5cm of clean, dry sand. Place a circle of silver foil on top. Fill with a layer of charcoal and light. Lay a grill on the pot (you could use one from an oven or grill pan or buy some metal mesh), wait for flames to turn to embers, and you are ready to barbecue. There are many pleasures to be had from cycling. For some it is simply about self-powering a journey from A to B. For women particularly, cycling was empowering in the early part of the 20th century when mobility (social as well as literal) was largely out of their control. It’s strange to think that my most treasured possession is a pair of boots that are so actively ignored when I don’t need them. Usually, accidental steps in hidden bogs that cause stagnant water to seep inside is the reason for their being left in the boot of the car. Always with a pledge of a deep clean and oil, but so often exchanged for a brisk bash in the car park to get rid of the biggest clods of mud before the next walk. These boots are older than I am. Worn in for 15 years by my mum and then passed down to me, the tricky size five-and-a-halfs have been moulded to fit from a constant cycle of damp fields, sea salt and mossy woodland paths. I like the idea of eating our meals in the garden on warm summer evenings, but the thought of lugging the contents of the kitchen (crockery, cutlery, wine glasses, salt and pepper, etc) out and back again defeats me. Ostensibly just a hole in the roof of a building – old or new, underground or not – through which to view the heavens, American artist James Turrell’s Skyspaces are gaining traction over here as one of the most meditative and moving forms of outdoor sculpture there is. Northumberland is best known for its castles and coastline, but what about inland? There has to be more to it than Harry Potter locations, we reasoned, and packed up the family for an exploration of the county’s Dark Sky Reserve, staying near Kielder Water. It’s possible to achieve a level of outdoors awareness that, although once common, is now so rare that many would label it a ‘sixth sense’. This is the practised ability to draw conclusions from all of the evidence presented to our senses almost without thinking. It is not mysterious but expert intuition, a honed ability to join the dots offered by our senses to complete a fuller picture of our environment. Once you know how, it is easy to sense direction from stars and plants, forecast weather from woodland sounds, and predict the next action of an animal from its body language – instantly. Whatever the weather, some sort of centrifugal force propels us to the sea, whether it’s to swim in its waters, surf its churning waves, paddle in the shallows, or simply to stand on a clifftop and stare at the vast ocean and its shifting colours. On a warm summer’s day, there are few better places to be than lying on a beach towel, a book open but probably unread, listening to the waves tumble and the gulls squawk. THE SELKIE-FOLK Stories about these shapeshifting creatures, found in Orkne Shetland, are generally doomed romances. Selkies live in the ocean as seals but transform into humans by shedding their skin. They can only return to the sea by putting their skin back on: if it is lost or stolen they are doomed to live as humans. Once on land, male selkies – notoriously handsome and seductive – often get involved with women. When they go back into the ocean, the women contact them by shedding seven tears int the sea. Female selkies are similarly attractive, and men have been known to steal their seal skin to stop them returning to the water.
