Jeong In-ji, a scholar of the Jiphyeonjeon, the ancient academic institute of the Joseon Dynasty, explained the principle of creating Hangeul in the preface to Hunminjeongeum. Focusing on the phonic characteristics of Hangeul, the National Hangeul Museum presents an opportunity to showcase new design of Hangeul created by artists from various disciplines, such as architecture, furniture design, graphic design, and video art. ‘Sounds × Hangeul: Variation of the Korean Alphabet’, the second project of the Hangul Experiment, began in 2016. The first part of the exhibition, ‘Hangeul Characters: Vessels of Sound’ introduces the principle of creating Hangeul, and the second part, ‘Sounds × Characters × Design’ mainly displays the works of designers.
