BAYDOG OFFSHORE LIFE JACKET Many of us love sailing with our dogs, but what's the best way to keep them safe out on the water? Same thing as with people—they need to wear a PFD! Never chartered? No worries. A vacation under sail can be the most memorable time of your life. That said, it also pays to be prepared by doing some reading, building your skills and listening to what the experts say. First and foremost, not all charter grounds are created equal. Some, like the British, U.S. and Spanish Virgin Islands, are as user-friendly as they come. Long Live the Cup Here in the second decade of the 21st century, it’s hard to imagine just how important the America’s Cup once was. Before the advent of such events as the Whitbread race (now The Ocean Race) and the Vendée Globe, the Cup was the world’s premiere sailing competition, bar none. A charter isn’t like most other vacations. It takes a good deal of pre-arrival strategizing and loads of onsite tactical execution if it’s to be a success. Quiet. Th at’s what you hear as you back away from the mooring. No chug, chug, chug from the diesel as water cascades out of the exhaust. Just a slight whirring as the boat smoothly glides in reverse. A twist of the throttle and the boat moves forward with the most notable sound being the wake proceeding astern. Despite this year’s myriad cancellations and postponements, the show will go on for the IMOCA 60 class. The Vendee Globe is scheduled to move ahead as planned, with sailors setting out from Les Sables d’Olonne, France, November 8. The Vendee Globe—a nonstop, solo, unassisted, circumnavigation—takes place every four years and is wildly popular with ocean racing fans. Despite only being visible to spectators for a few hours, it’s known for drawing enormous crowds, with millions of people turning out to see the boats off and welcome them back months later. It’s been a rocky road of late for the charter industry, especially here in the Western Hemisphere. First came hurricanes Irma and Maria in the Caribbean followed by Dorian in the Bahamas. There has also, of course, been the coronavirus, which burst into global prominence smack-dab in the middle of the late-winter charter season this year. As is the case with sailors everywhere, though, the mariners running the charter trade are made of pretty stern stuff. Steady breezes, clear blue water and plentiful bays where you can grab both a mooring and a good rum punch—the U.S. Virgin Islands are heaven on Earth for sailors of all stripes. They’re also the perfect place to get kids hooked on cruising, as our family recently discovered on a circumnavigation of St. John.
