With a working width of 4m, the Smart 400 from SMS Agro is primarily designed for establishing and overseeding grassland, but the Czech manufacturer says that the universal pneumatic seed drill can sow most common crops. Aimed at small and medium-sized farms seeking a compact and versatile drill, two rows of 410mm diameter x 5mm thick discs cut seed slots at 12.5cm intervals. Seed is administered via carbide tipped coulters, and the semi-mounted unit is available in hopper capacities from 300 to 800 litres. Operating at speeds of up to 12km/hr, maximum working depth is 10cm, and the 4.4t drill has a minimum power requirement of 120hp. The 695cc (49hp) single-cylinder, four-stroke engine in the 2026 Kymco UXV 700i is said to give the UTV plenty of power and torque to work hard on a farm. The automatic CVT in the side-by-side vehicle provides a dual range, reverse gear and active engine braking. The gear selector offers five options (low and high range, neutral, reverse, and park), and the spec includes push button selectable 4wd with locking front differential. Storage spaces include a lockable glove box, central storage compartment, under-hood storage for tools and a waterproof box under the driver’s seat. The 674kg UXV comes standard with hitch and electrics, high-performance brake discs, and heavy duty winch with remote control. Crawer has introduced a number of new lights including the teardrop cluster found on New Holland T6000/7000 and the T6/T7 tractors that don’t have the separate lower circular headlight introduced around 2018. The unit is supplied complete with the LED work light inserts and what product specialist Rob Haarhuis says is the road legal headlight. The light cluster also includes a daytime eyebrow strip which can be changed to amber if that is your thing. The round headlight has an outer halo which makes it different to other LED lights. This 90mm round light is also available separately as it fits many other tractors including the Fendt 410 Vario which was on the stand. CHC Nav has unveiled an array of new precision farming kit from sprayer controllers to new auto steer systems. The latter includes the 610 (10-inch screen) and 612 (12-in) which is set to replace the 510. Apart from the screen size, we are told there is no difference between the 610 and 612s functionality. The screens are ISObus ready and can also be used for section control. The receiver supports RTK connection. The steering wheel and motor has also been updated compared to that used with the 510 so it is more comfortable to use. Amazone launched its ED 01 precision drills way back in 1987, successor ED 02 models from 2003 sticking to essentially the same metering systems. The Precea range has since taken over the ED mantle, but do not let this put you off considering a now ageing ED drill as a used buy. Even the earliest of ED drills can still do a good job. Any item of machinery that has been available over several years will typically have been subject to numerous updates and developments. On Saturday 6 December H J Pugh at their excellent Ledbury, Herefordshire HQ staged their superbly successful Christmas vintage and classic tractor, lorry, car, model and stationary engine sale. It also features signs, memorabilia and the late Nick Baldwin literature collection which was housed in 30 cabinets in his north Devon office. This featured commercial vehicle, tractor and steam volumes of original literature and so much more. It took 2.5 days in early November to sort and catalogue it all. The Baldwin collection went on to gross over £40,000 for this section of the sale. A new range of fully-mounted shear bolt ploughs is being launched by Kverneland. Models benefit from an all-new leg and shear bolt protection system offering greater durability and withstanding higher working forces - typically 5000kg before the bolt shears, compared to 4500kg on previous Kverneland shear bolt ploughs. Models include the 2300B from 3-5 furrows, the 3300B from 4-6 furrows, plus the 3400B and 3500B available in 5-7 furrow formats. The 3500B is an isobus-equipped i-Plough version. While the 2300B and 3300B are in-furrow only for tractors up to 250hp and 330hp respectively, the larger 3400B and 3500B can be used on-land or in-furrow, with tractors up to 380hp. The water flow supplied by the Stihl WSA 40 battery-powered container helps suppress dust and cool the cutting wheel when working with a cut-off machine. Operating at a consistent pressure of 1.5 to 2.5 bars, with one 10.8v AS2 lithium-ion battery the compact 10-litre capacity pressurised container can deliver water continuously for up to 30 minutes or the equivalent of seven full tanks. Automatic shut-off conserves energy and extends battery service life by stopping operation when the tank runs empty or the container is no longer in use. Following its acquisition by ZC Rubber in 2022 and increased spending on R & D, Tianli has been able to expand its agri tyre offering. European sales director, Mark Turner, says it is not just new products that is being developed for Tianli. On-site production of carbon black is currently being built alongside a larger warehouse. He adds that Tianli is one of the largest dedicated manufacturers of off-highway tyres globally and the largest in Asia. Its Agri King range of VF tractor tyres has been on the market for a couple of years now. “But we want to offer a full front to back VF option, so we are adding the Trailer King range,” explains Mr Turner. On Sunday 16 November at Hook Norton Brewery, Oxfordshire, the wake took place for the incredible Sue/Daisy Sadler, who died on 3 October who was very well known in Kent and Sussex. This lady had a great spirit in so many ways and did so much for charity over the decades. She was a fearsome driver up hills, trailing her 1929 Austin Seven, and on the race track with the 1948 Allard L and the fearsome 1952 J2X. Sadly, she lost her central vision and had to give up driving for a while, but later on after treatment she was able to take up driving again. In the early 1990s she took up working with shire horses and did incredible things with them, including taking her well known Belgian horses…

HE-VA is to introduce a new disc drill specifically designed as a low cost means of establishing grass, grain and cover crops. Responding to market demand, the company has developed the 3m G-Drill as a straightforward tool capable of rapidly generating a drilling zone, placing seed at a consistent depth and consolidating the seedbed with a weather-proof finish. Central to this are two rows of 400mm diameter Vector scalloped discs. These are flanked by replaceable coulter boots which run in the shadow of the discs. Running at a 4° angle, this coulter arrangement generates a particularly narrow seed slot to minimise surface disturbance. The discs’ narrow pitch also means wear is kept to a minimum. Boosted no doubt by what one commentator described as a “phenomenal” harvest, the show expertly blended its various ingredients to come up with a sparkling vintage that celebrated English and Welsh wines and those who create them. The two exhibition halls were packed with visitors from shortly after the doors opened, while the stands themselves featured a wealth of shiny machinery, from an imposing grape harvester through the newest, narrowest utility task vehicle (UTV) to the latest cordless secateurs. Vicon has developed a fully automated sensor-based solution that provides real time data dry matter data when working with a disc mower conditioner. Positioned above the conditioning rotor, the DM sensor detects and measures the crop as it passes, and the actual value is displayed live on a screen in the cab. Examples of how the information can be used is to adjust the conditioning intensity or alter the mower from wide spreading to merging the crop into one swath. The DM sensor provides a heat map of each field. If the dry matter value is lower than expected, then tedding might be needed, and it can also be used to determine the optimal timing for the rake, merger, baler or forage harvester. German firm digital workbench is developing a larger version of its Tipard tool carrier. With an unladen weight of around 2.5t, the frame on the Tipard 2500 can carry a 1.5t payload and can be ordered for 3.0m or 4.0m kit. The goal is to fit it with a 60hp diesel generator and drive everything electrically. Track width is adjustable from 1.8 to 3m and ground clearance is up to 1.5m. Capello has been testing the Rubin belt header for three years and 20 pre-series machines will be in the field this season all around the world before going on sale in 2027. There are three widths (7.62m, 9.14m and 10.67m) the largest of which weighs 4.30t including the oil needed for the for the on-board hydraulic system. There is a total of 20cm of vertical flex in the Rubin S knife, the Rubin I has a rigid knife. Like its conventional headers the knife is sourced from Schumacher and driven from both ends. The National Vintage Tractor Road Run is heading to Cornwall in 2026. Established by Robert Coles and Ashley Godsall in 1985, the event is traditionally held every Easter Sunday, and is hosted by a different county each year, with funds raised going to local charities. Over the years many tens of thousands of pounds have been donated to good causes, and the 2026 edition will hopefully be no exception, raising money for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and Cornwall Blood Bikes. The base of operations will be the old World War Two naval airfield at St. Merryn, near Padstow, and within a stone’s throw of the dramatic North Cornwall coast. A Cheffins timed online sale on behalf of Somerset-based D H Patten Contracting, saw good prices paid for modern agricultural equipment which closed on 10 December. Running from 2 December for ten days, the timed online sale saw bidders take part from across the UK and Europe, competing for the 50 lots of premium and well-maintained machinery on offer, following a change in farm policy from D H Patten Contracting business. Highlights from the sale included a 2023 John Deere 6R250 grade 11 which achieved £115,920 when it sold to a local farming business.
