The Czech manufacturer SMS says it listened to customer feedback in developing the third generation of the Ontario disc cultivator. Currently available in working widths of 5.0m and 6.0m, the shorter design is said to provide improved manoeuvrability, especially on headlands. The mid-mounted axle results in a better spread of the machine weight and the space between the two rows of discs and rollers helps prevent blockages. The company says that placing the centre of gravity closer to the drawbar prevents the machine from swaying at faster speeds and results in an even working depth. Standard disc diameter is 510mm (560mm optional) and the discs are secured by rubber silent blocks. While less than a quarter of all triple mowers sold in the UK are non-conditioner models, there is greater demand in other markets which is why Claas has introduced a new top model, the Disco 1010 with a maximum working width of 9.9m when paired with a the 3.4m front or 9.7m with a more typical 3200F. The overlap is altered by changing the position of the pivot pin. To achieve the sub-4.0m transport, the 1010 has ‘Vector’ folding. This uses the hydraulic breakback hydraulic rams to tilt the mowers rearward. Hydraulic end guards also do their part in reducing the height on the 2.3t back mower. The striking paintwork on this 7718S marks the 50th anniversary of Japanese Massey Ferguson importer MSK Farm Machinery. Known as the ‘Ghost’ tractor, the headlight housing, body, rear fenders, roof and mirrors, are finished in a candy red metallic and the logo on the front of the bonnet is encased with LEDs. This is the only model. It was sold as soon as it was announced. MSK has also given a special paint job to 64 other MF tractors (5713S, 7718S, 7720S and 7726S). Only available in Japan, the main colour is ‘Soul red’ metallic. The bonnet decals and headlight housing are finished in black chrome, the wheels in gold metallic and the rim stripe represents the colours of the French flag. The automatic steering system is the main feature of the Pöttinger Top632A twin rotor side swathing rake. Known as Curvetech, two hydraulic cylinders work together to steer the rear rotor, which is connected to the front one by a flexible frame, to the left or right. When the spool valve is actuated, the rear rotor swings out on the correct side and the pre-select for folding the hydraulic swath curtain is included. An additional linkage between the front pivot point of the main frame and the hydraulic cylinders is said to optimise the overlap of the two rotor units when cornering. Kverneland reckons to have taken precision spraying one step further with SpotSpray. Other stand out features on the new IXtrack T4 trailed sprayer range include a 24/36m steel boom, 25cm nozzle distance and the next generation boom height control system. Available on all sprayers with IXspray software, the standard SpotSpray software allows a 10-hour trial period to test out how it works. Based on predefined prescription maps, the sprayer shuts on and off in combination with the SpotSpray application to spray only designated spots of a field. This is done based on the predefined sections in the control terminal and can be achieved in combination with IXflow-Air or IXflow-E, but even with normal sprayer section valves. We had a quick look at Krone’s new Vendro range of tedders last year when we tried out the four-rotor 560. But now it’s time for something bigger, not just in width, but also workload as we test the 11.2m wide Vendro 1120 for a season… to get a better idea of what it’s like to live with. This is the biggest model in the fresh-out-of-the-box line-up that will eventually replace the long-serving KW. The 1120 has 10 of the 1.50m diameter rotors; depending on working width, other models get 1.37m, 1.70m and 1.82m rotors. For part of the test the IQblue was connected to a five-furrow Juwel 8 reversible. The furrow width was adjusted by GNSS and TIM. The trial compared the time and fuel requirement of both manual and automatic vari-width by ploughing standardised wedge-shaped plots. It also looked at handling and operation as well as the functionality of the ‘straight furrow’ mode. In this mode the plough automatically compensates for different furrow widths which may be caused by varying soil types. The system can also work towards maintaining a target furrow width to plough out the final furrow without extra runs. More power less weight is the mantra for the new Torion 1611 and 1611P which replace the 1511 and 1511P after just one year. The newcomers have a six-cylinder block producing 207hp and 252hp respectively. The ‘P’ model is better suited to clamping work as it is slightly lighter (15,200kg versus 15,810kg), the extra mass of the 1611 allowing it to lift more hence it is aimed more at handling tasks. Fliegl’s SteerX electro-hydraulic steering system differs to current forced- and self-steering axles in that there is no mechanical connection to the tractor. Instead, it uses a sensor on the trailer. Available for many of it tandem and tridem models, all that is required are load-sensing hydraulics and an ISObus connection. Inheriting much of their technology from the Ultra HD model, the latest five-model range of 2200 large square balers come with a new running gear, higher capacity pick-up and stronger components. The plunger runs on new and larger sealed bearings, and redesigned wrapper bands in the pre-compression chamber are claimed to improve feeding and increase reliability. The new bale chute combines a single, side-mounted lift ram and heavy-duty straps. Lighter than chains, these are claimed to help reduce noise and reduce the risk of damage to the paintwork. Other updates include electronic bale length setting, and the new suspended tandem axle keeps the transport width to below 3.0m on 620/50-22.5 tyres, and the new operating terminal is said to be easier to operate. Nearly two years on from the launch of the radical-looking 8S, Massey Fergusons 152kW/205hp to 117kW/305hp range is still turning heads when you see one in the wild. Even if you re not a fan of the standout styling, you have to tip your cap to the design team that dared to be so different. The Omega drill has been in the Bednar line-up since 2011, and today it’s sold in widths from 3.0m to 9.0 with seed-only as well as grain and fert variants. Nowadays LEDs are almost becoming the default on new tractors, and, if not, then they're more than likely an option. But what about more recent second-hand tractors that have work lights integrated into the cab roof or bonnet that still rely on halogens for their illumination? For these tractors, retailers such as AgrarLED put together LED packages with lamps from the likes of Dutch manufacturer Crawer for a retrofit solution. We ordered and fitted a system for a Claas Axion 830 model, which rolled off the French production line in 2015. Our featured tractor has the full lighting package with a total of 20 work lights. Dutch company Wingssprayer was set up by the spraying contractor Harrie Hoeben 12 years ago with the aim of putting all his ideas for reducing spray drift into commercial practice, His concept for a wing sprayer deflection system emerged back in 2010, and, in broad outline, the idea is to use a purpose-developed aerofoil to exploit airflow to reduce spray drift. Several developments along the way have refined the concept, including the nozzle holders that simplify installation and reduce overall weight. Unfortunately, thefts of GPS receivers, not only from tractors but also from self-propelled foragers and combines, happen time and time again. John Deere’s StarFire 6000 seems to be particularly popular with thieves despite the possible PIN code protection and factory locking solution. In the recent past, Hanover-based contracting firm Bünger-Lang has had over 15 receivers stolen, plus a number of displays. The brazen thieves even broke into the locked machinery shed to steal the units from parked tractors. In total, these thefts have cost the business almost €200,000. While there is always the challenge of finding a replacement at short notice, there is also the question of who pays for all the damage and to what extent. Only months after Deere launched the 'real' X9 combine harvester, a digital replica very soon appeared in the Giants Modhub for Farming Simulator. With a user rating of 4.8 stars out of 5.0 it was an impressive result, even more so when you realise SiiD Modding created the digital depiction from just looking at videos and photos. In fact, SiiD Modding has released both a US and European version, the X9 1000 and X9 1100. Both can be configured in different ways, allowing users to choose from several options including tracks or wheels. A header is not included within the mudpack; however Farming Simulator already offers a matching 13.70m header. Suitable for applying a wide range of seeds and fertiliser, the Kverneland F-drill front hopper can be combined with different implements and widths. Seeding and fertilising in one pass is possible as well as the combined application of seeds and companion crops. Available in two sizes and two versions, the F-drill Compact has a capacity of 1,600 litres and the F-drill Maxi up to 2,200 litres. The standard version is equipped with one Eldos metering unit. All Lexion models now get the Trion cab which has more leg and headroom as well as increased storage, better temperature regulation and slimmer cab pillars for improved visibility. There has also been a rejig of the 8000 series with more power for the 8700 and 8800 which are now rated at 625hp (Merc OM 473LA motor) and 700hp (Man D42). The Scorpion has also had a visit from the engineering team with the 732, 736, 741 and 746 getting a new Deutz 3.6l motor with a 6.0hp power increase to 143hp or 156hp and an extra 50Nm of torque. There is a new cooling pack, air filter and the Stage V after treatment is more compact. The braking valve and pedal as well as the software have all been improved and an automatic park brake is standard. Automatic boom retraction should help boost cycle times on the 746 to 960 Scorpions. Kverneland started production of its 3300S Variomat plough in readiness for autumn 2021. Design of the new plough, in part, followed the firm’s established EG series, with the front furrow width set independently of the headstock. Additional elements are borrowed from the 2500 I-Plough. There is a growing selection of grease gun couplers that latch on the nipple to prevent lubrication leakage. Indeed we previously looked at the G-Coupler in the 3/2016 issue and more recently the Lube Pro Plus in the 4/2022 magazine. The Snapstar from Umeta follows a similar logic and costs around €60 online. Snapstar connects to the hose with an M10x1 or a G1/8 thread. The coupler automatically attaches to the nipple with a firm push and is pulled off to remove it. This makes it faster than the screw-on or lever-activated couplers and ideal for pistol grip or cordless powered grease guns. The opportunity to save fuel could be one driver why farmers take a serious look at varying working depth during primary cultivations. The philosophy is to work as shallow as possible but as deep as necessary. The Austrian Innovation Farm wanted to put some of this theory into practice last summer. Lemken supplied the hardware, a trailed 4.0m Karat 9/400KA with three rows of tines, with the firm’s IQblue Connect doing the clever interaction between the application map and the machine.
