Abit of a spoiler right from the start. If you are after a general-purpose farm saw with a bit of extra power for some heavy work, a model such as the 64.1cc Stihl MS391 is a good ‘top end’ choice. Now take a look at the 79.2cc MS500i. Like the 391, the 500i weighs the same 6.2kg without fuel, oil, bar and chain. Farm manager Armin Schirneker-Reineke, who runs an organic farm at Bad Salzuflen in northern Germany, used to fit conventional dual wheels for field work. However, when he was unable to obtain special permits for over-wide tractors he had to find an alternative solution. On the hunt for an answer, he contacted engineering firm Becklönne (which, among other things, makes a maize silage transfer elevator; see profi Harvest Special 2019) with the task of creating an easy fitting system that would allow the farm to use public roads. Lots of new implements with electric controls are still not ISObus-compatible. One of the main reasons for this is that the ISObus system is very complex to program. It takes time to get the certificate rubber stamped, which makes it a particularly expensive procedure for manufacturers with lower sales volumes. The necessary ‘ISObus Development Software’ costs €7,500 for the first year alone. In addition, software developers who understand the full ‘ins and outs’ are in demand so are hard to find. TIP OF THE MONTH No fiery surprises Found in many workshops, anvils are regularly associated with heat and hot metal. Usually anvils are mounted on a wooden block, but this owner was worried the dried timber could lead solution. A to a fire so they looked for a less flammable 200-litre oil drum was given a thorough clean before being cut down to 450mm in height. A rubber edge protector was fitted to the lip of the drum which was then packed with sand. The overall height, complete with anvil is 800mm. When the Rubin 9 was launched in 2011 it was just as the compact disc market was starting to get going. The heavy-duty Lemken short disc harrow stood out from the crowd with its large diameter, scalloped discs each mounted on a cranked leg with sizeable coil spring protection allowing it to work down to 13cm. All of these features have been carried over to its successor, the Rubin 10 along with a host of substantial modifications. We tested the 5.0m semimounted Rubin 10/500KUA. “We've always encountered problems of some form or other with more traditional hoes,” says Dieter Leibing. “Among the various drawbacks are that the parallelogram frames require a great deal of maintenance, that the depth control rubber wheels are not always effective; and that the penetration can be a real problem in our heavy soils.” A farmer and qualified engineer, Dieter designed and built his first prototype in 2014, and his Sicklehoe is now in production. A good hour’s drive north east of Bergen (Norway’s second largest city) lies Evanger, where Sondre Århus runs a dairy farm with just 20 cows. In January last year, Sondre took over the family farm and immediately set about building a new dairy cow house. Back in 2008 his father leased out the farm, including its 43,000 litres of milk quota, and since then the old barns have been used for suckler cows. Milk production is a decent earner in western Norway: commodity base price is currently 4.36 Norwegian Krone, which is the equivalent of €0.33 or £0.30. A combustion engine lacks the ability to fire up on its own; it needs a source of mechanical energy that cranks it up fast enough so the fuel pump feeds atomised diesel into the cylinders. As the pistons move to compress the air-fuel mix inside the combustion chamber, the diesel fuel will eventually self-ignite. The power required for cranking and starting the engine is provided by the humble electric starter. This generally consists of three main components: a solenoid switch, a freewheeling engagement drive and an electric starter motor. Let’s take a closer look at what all of these various items do. Potato growers are facing a massive challenge when it comes to dealing with crop haulm. There's certainly no shortage of chemical solutions, but there is a huge gap between the costs and the benefits. Other options are using gas to burn it or high-voltage electric, but both of these methods are not as straightforward or costeffective as topping, particularly when there is a quick change of plan. They may have been out of fashion for some time, but toppers are now making a comeback. Manufacturers report an increase in interest and sales. It still remains to be seen whether growers will shift to other early-maturing varieties with haulm maturing more rapidly or adopt a more minimum fertiliser application approach. Although the Fusion 3 has been wearing the same clothes since it was introduced in 2012, each season has seen subtle tweaks under the curvy panels. Back in 2004, many of the big tillage farms were running some form of disc and tine cultivator tillage train from the likes of Grégoire Besson, Quivogne, Simba and Väderstad. Today of those four, just the TopDown is being actively sold here, the tool’s stubble busting abilities seeing it used for producing a sterile seedbed, preparing ground ahead of a drill through to producing a ‘weatherproof’ tilth for over wintering. The Micheln EvoBib is about 40% more expensive than the firm's comparable standard MachXBib tyre. As a hybrid tyre it should be optimally suited for both field and road. To find out if this is the case, our colleagues at the Dutch magazine Trekker, along with a number of European publications, decided to investigate by pitting the Michelin EvoBib against the MachXBib. Auctioneers Ashley Waller conducted a farm dispersal sale in mid-July at Hulme Barns Farm, Mere, in Cheshire, upon kind instructions received from Anthony Bloor. This was the first off-site auction since the lockdown and all those attending wore a face mask and observed a social distance – something which is certainly required for the foreseeable future. The equipment on offer was impeccably maintained and extremely well presented, which meant prices achieved were above market value. Top lot of the day and certainly of most interest was the 2011 John Deere 7530 that hit an incredible £58,000, well above its actual value.
