According to the latest survey by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBHVC), the average age of classic car owners in the UK age has increased from 63 to 66. The UK’s ongoing cost-of-living crisis is stopping younger enthusiasts from snapping up their first classic buys – despite car enthusiasts under the age of 35 showing plenty of interest in owning older vehicles. Experts have called for more to be done to encourage the next generation after new figures from the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs showed that the average age of classic owners in the UK is now 66, compared to 63 five years ago. How did you first get into classic cars? 'I have been into classic cars for as long as I can remember. It’s something I have always had a passion for. Where once every manufacturer had a coupé in its range – often a cut down, rakish version of a family wagon – in this era of conformity, it appears only to be the preserve of Germanmanu facturers at the high end. No fun for the rest of us, then. But what is a coupé anyway? It is the Frenchword for ‘cut’, so implies a lowered roof line. Why you want one Evolving from the ground-breaking Bradford-built Javelin family car of 1947, the highly advanced Jupiter emerged, at first, as a mere chassis displayed at the 1949 London Motor Show. When the completed car was unveiled the following spring in New York City, jaws dropped. There had never been anything quite like it. An aerodynamic body covered a tubular chassis designed by Auto Union, ERA and Aston Martin engineer Robert Eberan-Eberhors – while torsion bar suspension at each end, large Girling hydraulic brakes, and Jowett’s front-mounted flat-four engine hit the spot with the press, customers and racing drivers alike. The Japanese car industry in the late Eighties and very early Nineties was booming like DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince out of a Panasonic RX-5090. That is to say, the big (and even some of the small) car makers found themselves riding fiscal flotsam at high tide. Sadly, a global recessionshaped tsunami was on its way – one so destructive that, were it not for Porsche seeking Toyota’s production expertise, even the Stuttgart stallion would likely have called it quits. Lotus Europa S Models built on the Elise platform came thick and fast and almost every one of them offered something unique, which broadened the appeal of the Lotus brand into the Noughties. However, the Europa S of 2006 is something of a black sheep. In essence, it’s a Vauxhall VX220 with a roof that offers more practicality (just) and usability than an Elise. The problem was that it neither offered the performance nor comfort of the traditional compact GTs it was pitched against. Neither was it as sharp and focused as the Elise or the even more extreme Exige, so it fell through the gaps. Where do we start? ‘Well, in the first barn we have the Singer Vogue Estate, an unfinished project that I completed, then there’s the 1968 Morris Minor two-door saloon with period mods including Fiat 500 front seats. The caravan is a 1970 Knowsley Caravan. We bought it last year and got it into usable condition – we tow it behind the Marina Mumford Convertible. The 1981 TR7 is about to have a gearbox rebuild. I was fixing a mate’s Defender on the drive when one of my neighbours mentioned he had seen a Land Rover fire engine in Harrogate. The annual Sunbeam Motorcycle Club Pioneer Run from Epsom Downs to Brighton is off the radar for most of us classic car types. That’s mainly because it is for motorcycles, tricycles, sidecars and selected quadricycles – yes they are a thing – manufactured before the close of the 1914 ‘season’. Very niche. Even so, it is the world’s largest gathering of pre-1915 machines, with typically 250 entries on the day, all put-put-putting on the way to the south coast. Any resto is full of ups and downs. As tinkerers, we’re hard wired to search out the endorphins that accompany tangible progress or a spot of retail therapy. More than 100 classic Astons gathered for the 70th anniversary celebrations at Aston Martin works in Newport Pagnell on 11 October. The celebrations included every major Aston Martin and Lagonda model built between 1955 and the early 2000s to present. DB7 and V12 Vanquish designer Ian Callum spoke, along with motorsport legend Ray Mallock and Iain Heggie, son of 1960s Aston MD Steve Heggie. Every area of the business was open throughout, with visitors able to look ‘behind the scenes’. Members of the UK’s biggest Triumph club have raised a staggering £45,000 by driving 2000 miles in 48 hours. The Club Triumph Round Britain Reliability Run happens every other year and has raised over £800,000 for charities since its inception in 1966. It involves a gruelling drive around the coastline of Britain, all completed within a weekend. Among them was Team Very Amateur Motorsport, for whom the charity has special meaning. Team member Shaun Roche lost his mum, Jean, to the illness in January this year. Shaun, along with John Welsh, a renowned classic hillclimber, and Hamish Roscoe, who competes in sprint events, took part in one of the last-ever Triumphs made – a 1983 Acclaim. ‘We’ve raised more than £5000 for Parkinson’s UK, and we’re determined to keep going,’ said Shaun, from…

Collaboration between clubs is always a good thing because of the economies of scale. That’s why last year’s Inter-Club International Weekend at the Malvern Three Counties Showground was such a great event; thanks to the efforts of the Triumph Sports Six Club, the TR Register and the MG Car Club, it brought together lots of other smaller clubs. Next year, the Morris Register will be running a similar event from Friday July 31 until Sunday August 2, at Thoresby Park in Nottinghamshire. For several years, it was my dream car – the Vauxhall hypersaloon they tried to ban. Celebrated by every true petrolhead who drove one and every wannabe who went near one, it was uncompromising – a car for true believers. Delivering high performance in perfect style and absolute comfort for all the family, the Lotus Carlton was a one-off. Audi S6 (C4 first-gen) 30 LEFT ON UK ROADS No, we’re not talking about the bombastic first-generation RS6 (C5), but its slower and surprisingly sparse C4-generation precursor. The first-generation Audi S6 followed in the four-wheel drive footsteps of the S4 that predated it; both were on the same C4 platform as the legendary Porsche-developed RS2 Avant. Adding to the confusion, you could also get an S6 Avant, with both body shapes available with 2.2 turbo five-cyl or, even rarer with just 30-odd survivors, a n/a V8 (282bhp). FIRST IMPRESSIONS Fading Paint discolouration can be caused by a number of issues. The key is to identify the cause, so the correct solution can be applied. Oxidised paint surfaces are simply fixed – but if there isn’t sufficient paint present, it can be a dangerous game. Seats Leather seats develop both creases and wear marks as they age. To many, this is simply part of the beauty of the material – but if scuffs strike through the surface colour, or creases develop into cracks, it may mean a retrim is required. Headlining Glued headlinings can fail over time as the adhesive loses its elasticity. This can be down to age, damp or even poor cleaning and maintenance.
