Pushing the boundaries (and our luck) as always, this month you are witness to the first ever instance of an all-electric line-up on the cover of a classic car magazine. LED BULB LEGALITY AMENDED From Janury 11, a change to the MOT tester’s inspection manual means that classics using LED headlight upgrades could be failed if such a conversion has been done to an existing halogen headlamp unit. The manual now states that ‘Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.’ The new rules will come into effect from February 1. IN THE NEWS British Rail’s InterCity 125 – also known as the High Speed Train – secured its status as the world’s fastest diesel-powered train by achieving 148mph on a three-coach train (testing new passenger carriage bogies) between York and Northallerton in November. 125mph was the usual maximum operating speed for HSTs, with the two power cars developing 2250hp each. Peugeot 605 38 LEFT ON UK ROADS Big Gallic saloons have never really done it for us Brits. That’s a real shame as we’ve missed out on some great machines over the years. One that did come to our shores was the 605. France’s take on the BMW 5 Series was built on a platform shared with the Citroën XM. It came from an era when Peugeot still cared about handling and performance and, as a result, it’s a surprisingly sharp steer. Engines ranged from a four- cylinder 8-valve, to the 12-valve PRV V6 through 16-valve fours and actually decent diesels. With the Austin Seven’s rolling chassis taking shape, it was finally time to order some aluminium and start building the body. Oils Engine oil provides protection from both friction and percussive forces within your engine. If it’s drained away from key areas or degraded over time, it won’t be offering that protection. Look out for the long term health of your car. Electrics From flat batteries to corroded ignition-points or manky earths, sitting around will have likely caused degradation of your electrical systems. If you’re lucky, your car will start, but will everything work as it should? Rubber Rubber components deteriorate over time. If it’s a wiper blade, it’s annoying. If it’s a brake hose, failure could be fatal. It always pays to check……

For many years, the surefire method for rust removal and surface preparation in classic car restoration has been grit/media-blasting. The process entails an abrasive medium striking the surface of an object in a stream of compressed air. This action effectively removes rust, paint and contamination from even deeply pitted or contoured surfaces. Once extremely expensive, you can now buy cabinets for under £170, and unbranded compressors to suit from £190. Although dry-grit-blasting is relatively quick and cheap, it does have some drawbacks. There’s a lot of dust produced that isn’t well-controlled by cheaper units, requiring the use of PPE and the exclusion of the unit from clean areas. As the medium strikes the surface, it causes friction and localised heating, which in turn can damage delicate/thin parts. Finally, microscopic amounts…

Like it or not, the automotive world is heading for electric power. We classic enthusiasts can be a part of this, as you can read in this issue (see p52). But there’s more than one way to power electric propulsion. Charging up a big battery pack from the mains is the obvious one, but the idea of filling up with liquid fuel isn’t dead yet. Car-makers have been working on fuel-cell cars for years and do so in the hope that the hydrogen on which such cars rely will become readily available in large, cheap quantities. That could be by solar-powered electrolysis of water, by clever use of industrial by-products or even from biomass. REVIEW Lucky for some Bargains bagged at muted H&H season-ender H&H had a quiet end to 2020 with just 46 cars on offer at its December online sale, only 26 of which found buyers. Being the last sale of a busy week for auctions can’t have helped matters. There were some good cars in the catalogue, too, with several snapped up for what looked like bargain prices. Most notable for me was the MG Magnette ZB Varitone. From a deceased estate, it had been with the last owner since 1992 and then extensively refurbished around 2012. As anticipated last month, the first few miles in my CX threw up some faults. On passing its first MOT since 1996, the car initially ran well and as it hit the road for the first time, I was delighted to discover that two years of hard work had paid off. However, the subsequent test runs revealed a steadily worsening misfire. It had become particularly noticeable on tickover and felt like it was, at worse, running on fewer than all four of its cylinders. And then it would go away, and everything would run perfectly again. Classic car parts supply problems to and from the UK are beginning to affect the industry. Trading restrictions since Britain left the EU on January 1, 2021 are being blamed. Readers have reported being unable to source parts. Among others, BMW Group Classic parts supply website displayed a notice stating that ‘From January 1, 2021 shipment to the UK will no longer be possible.’ When asked to comment, a BMW Group Classic spokesman told PC: ‘Classic parts are still available for UK customers via BMW UK retailers. Unfortunately due to custom constraints, they cannot now be purchased directly from BMW Group Classic’s online part shop.’ PC was later told that BMW is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. After going into administration on April 17, 2020, Coys of Kensington is on its way back. It was recently purchased by the family office of the well-known enthusiast family, the Calleris. The business has been restructured with full financial backing, but currently the potential for private individuals left out of pocket from the insolvency to be compensated is unknown. It is the first time the company has had a complete change in ownership since the Nineties. Nick Wells, formerly a consultant to Coys, will partner the Calleris in the venture. Coys’ famous showroom in Richmond, London is currently being completely refurbished and will reopen early to visitors later in the year. Breadvan bother It may be the most distinctive Polo now, but when the MkII ‘Kammback’ came out, its style was controversial. VW rushed out a traditional hatchback coupé in 1983 in a bid to to boost sales. Bard grammar Waterstone’s was founded in 1982 and controversially lost the apostrophe in its name in 2012. But as soon as I am settled in, the nerves evaporate, simply because an MGA is a delightful place to be. It is as intuitive and airy on the inside as it is perfectly proportioned on the outside. The B-Series pops into life and chatters eagerly. Changing up through the gears, the resistance of the radials quickly disappears as speed increases. This is a British sports car that invites you to go for a ‘spin’ rather than a ‘blast’. It’s not, in any way, ‘hairy chested’ and that’s no bad thing. Never buy a car in the rain, in a lay-by, in a hurry, or in the dark. Never buy one that reeks of fish or rodent. Never buy a car without seeing its extended family tree or a bona fide doctor’s note. And certainly, never ever buy one completely sight unseen. And that, in a nutshell, is how you buy a car, according to any buyers’ guide worth its salt. THEO’S JOB CARD MAKE YOUR OWN BLASTER A wet-media-blaster is an ideal DIY project. There are lots of different approaches to achieving a similar end-result. The easiest starting point will be to convert a dry-blast-cabinet, however we’re going to build our own cabinet then use easily and cheaply available components to create a fully functioning wet blaster for a fraction of the cost of an off the shelf unit. How tough? You’ll need: PPE, plywood, glue, screws, glassfibre resin, catalyst, flowcoat and matting, steel, hose, submersible pump, bucket, fittings, and blast nozzle, glass, air compressor, regulator, foot valve and fittings, gloves, handles, paint, catches, castors, seals.
