A STUDY reveals that having a food allergy as a baby is linked to asthma and reduced lung function later in childhood. The research, led by Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, found that early life food allergy was associated with an increased risk of both asthma and reduced lung growth at age 6. The study involved 5 276 infants, who underwent skin prick testing to common food allergens, including peanut and egg and oral food challenges, to test for food allergy. At 6 years, children were followed up with further food allergy and lung function tests. The results, published in the Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, showed that by age 6, 13.7% reported a diagnosis of asthma. RACIST social media messages, a lack of intervention by Indian police officers, and private security companies “taking the law into their own hands”, were among the key drivers of the “racially motivated” attacks in Phoenix during the July 2021 unrest. A day after the SAHRC and CRL Rights Commission released their findings and recommendations into the 2021July unrest, the 65 alleged instigators who were charged in connection with the unrest and public violence made their first appearance in the Durban High Court. In Chatsworth last week, Timel Moonsamy, 11, sustained injuries to her hand after the family’s two-year-old dog Rusty turned on her. THE KZN Liquor Authority (KZNLA) has intensified its efforts to clamp down on businesses such as shebeens and those selling alcohol illegally. Bheki Mbanjwa, the acting chief executive officer of the KZNLA, said shebeens were not recognised as legal operators in KwaZulu-Natal. “Consequently, they operate with- out licenses and fall outside the regulatory purview of the KZNLA. “Furthermore, the issue of illegal alcohol trading is not unique to KZN, as highlighted by the Minister of Treasury, Enoch Godongwana, who noted a national impact of a R3.7 billion reduction in revenue during the first six months of the 2024 financial year,” he said. These are also referred to as milk mawa, doodh peda, khara pera or milk ladoo. 200g butter (room temperature) 1½ cups sifted icing (confectionery) sugar 1¾ cups milk powder ½ tsp cardamom (elachi) powder Do not use margarine because the taste will not be the same. Joeash Govindsamy and his wife Aveshnee Naidoo were found guilty of killing Bryson Munilall and could face life imprisonment. Munilall, 27, was stabbed in the parking lot of Dance Café, a nightclub in Chris Hani Road, Durban, in November 2022. He is the son of magistrate Bryan Munilall. Joeash, 29, and his wife Aveshnee, 23, of Greenbury in Phoenix, were arrested and charged with murder. Both pleaded not guilty. IT WAS with disbelief and disappointment that I read the article about Jaskaran Rajaruthnam being sidelined for the Sasol bursary. If, as reported, the announcement was made that Jaskaran qualified for the bursary, but then it was retracted when he privately went to claim his incentive, that constitutes legal action. That the Department of Education would allegedly stoop to that level is alarming. Indians are not sub-citizens. Many of us have groomed our children to be achievers.
