SENTENCE Justice for Miguel is served JANINE MOODLEY janine.moodley@inl.co.za TWO years and eight months have passed since the body of Miguel Louw was found and Detective Warrant Officer Rajan Govender is relieved that justice has finally been served for the little boy. Govender, from KZN’s Provincial Investigation Unit, who spent sleepless nights investigating and piecing evidence together, said he was pleased with the 34-year sentence handed to convicted killer and kidnapper Mohammed Vahed Ebrahim last Wednesday. Deviating from the minimum prescribed sentence of life imprisonment, Judge Jacqueline Henriques gave Ebrahim 25 years for premeditated murder. He was sentenced to a further eight years for kidnapping and 18 months for theft – both of which will run concurrently with the murder sentence. TEEN ADMITTED AGAIN Isipingo shooting survivor remains critical CHARLENE SOMDUTH charlene.somduth@inl.co.za THE survivor of a shooting in Malagazi Township near Isipingo two weeks ago, remains in a critical condition. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was allegedly in a relationship with Allestine Noleen Joseph who was killed during the incident. Last week, the POST reported the couple were asleep in his bedroom on the morning of April 30 when five men broke down the door to his home and shot them several times. Joseph, 35, who owned a scrap metal business, was shot in the right arm, left leg and chest. She died at the scene. The mother of two was cremated at the Clare Estate Crematorium last Wednesday. The individuals had a history of recent arrivals from India. • Kenya: According to a statement by the Kenyan Health Ministry, the first case of the Indian variant was confirmed last week. The case was detected from samples taken from Indian travellers working in Kisuma, a city in Kenya. Electricity problems could improve in Msunduzi CHANELLE LUTCHMAN chanelle.lutchman@inl.co.za RESIDENTS and the business sector have welcomed news that Eskom will step in to assist the Msunduzi Municipality with network maintenance and capacity. Last week, Eskom and the municipality announced that it signed an active partnership agreement where Eskom has been appointed as the network maintenance services agent. According to the statement, the agreement is for three years and it will assist the municipality to boost revenue collection. Monde Bala, Eskom’s group executive for distribution, said through these agreements, Eskom hoped to help contribute to the rebuilding of municipal capacity. Our ministers should be experts in their fields THE deployment of ANC cadres to senior government positions is a contentious issue and it is flawed. This came up at the commission of inquiry into allegations of state capture. I understand that a majority party will have higher representation in Parliament. Having a higher representation is one thing but fielding candidates without important portfolios is another thing. Since democracy, the ANC has seen white, Indian and coloured political representatives dwindle and with it a wealth of governing experience. PROTEST Man accused of killing dad to apply for bail NIKITA CHINIAH THE man accused of killing 40-year-old Crossmoor father Nichalen “Donald” Naidoo was due to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a formal bail application. Naidoo died after allegedly being beaten, knocked and then dragged under a car for about 200 metres. ‘PARAMEDICS PROFITED’ Cylinders sold on the black market: pair held DELHI Police said two paramedics were arrested for their alleged involvement in the black market sale of oxygen cylinders. Police also recovered Rs 1 lakh (100 000 rupees, just over R19 000) from them. Atul Kumar Thakur, deputy commissioner of police, said police received a call on May 6 about oxygen cylinders being sold at exorbitant prices. Police contacted the complainant, who said a person posted a message on social media, regarding the supply of oxygen cylinders for patients suffering from Covid-19. “However, when she contacted the number, the person demanded Rs 90 000 (just over R17 000) for a 50-litre oxygen cylinder,” Thakur said. For four consecutive days, from Wednesday to Saturday, the country recorded an average of 2 000 cases a day. Menziwa Afrika Mdakane, 35, and Zakhele Dubazane, 32, both of Dobsonville in Soweto, were acquitted in the Durban High Court on Monday. They were also acquitted on charges of unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. Mdakane and Dubazane were arrested and charged for killing Ramjet-tan outside his business in August 2018. Ramjettan, a father of one, was talking to a customer in the parking lot of his Clairwood petrol station when a gunman walked up to him and shot him twice in the head. He died at the scene.
