Girlfriend appears in court over fatal stabbing CHARLENE SOMDUTH Facebook AS FAMILY members of Yogan Moodley performed his last rites on Tuesday, his girlfriend, Alisha Balgobind, appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court charged with his murder. On Saturday night, Moodley, 30, was stabbed with a kitchen knife on his left arm, the left side of his ribcage, his groin and buttocks at their rented outbuilding in Cardinal Road, Phoenix. The awaiting-trial prisoner is the eldest grandchild of Amichand Rajbansi, who started the Minority Front. Rajbansi, 30, was taken to King Edward VIII Hospital after he suffered seizures at Westville Prison. His family were allegedly notified last Monday, two weeks after his admission. At the time, Rajbansi was unable to speak or eat by himself and was dependent on oxygen. Last Tuesday, when the family tried to move him to a private facility, the authorities at Westville Prison demanded payment of just more than R145 000 for a private guard to be stationed outside his room. The report was submitted by Dr Raksha Ramjiawan, a district surgeon who specialises in clinical forensic medicine at the Thuthuzela Care Centre at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Phoenix. The victim’s stepfather is on trial in the Durban High Court for the alleged crimes committed against her. He faces 56 counts, including rape, child abuse, sexual exploitation, human trafficking and the creation of child pornography. The accused was arrested on June 11, 2018. Conman sentenced to 35 years CHANELLE LUTCHMAN A CHATSWORTH man who defrauded seven people of R594 000 was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Sugan Naicker, 37, pleaded guilty in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday to defrauding his victims. Naicker, who was arrested in Margate last April, has been wanted by police since 2016. Most of his victims, with whom he had close ties, lived in Chatsworth. Some had attended the same school, or lived on the same road. Naicker convinced them to invest with him, promising they would see high returns. He was given amounts ranging from R10 000 to R174 000. On October 5, Warrant Officer Gabriel Chetty was arrested by Ipid, the National Intelligence Agency and the Organised Crime Unit. Chetty, a policeman for 23 years, appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrate’s Court two days later on a charge of murder, perjury and defeating the ends of justice.
