I’m not much of a gaming enthusiast, but I’ve always had a soft spot for an old-school adventure game. Unfortunately, it’s a genre for which I have very little aptitude. I’ve started dozens of quests over the years, but I can count on one hand the number I’ve seen through to the end without having to resort to Google, or whatever the equivalent might have been. I’m just back from a holiday in France, where I spent much of my time in a cheap, aluminium-framed lounger under an olive tree, reading an excellent book. One day I found a bizarre creature sitting on the back of my lounger: not a member of the Pokémon family, but a humble cicada. Thanks to superfast SSDs, abundant RAM and progressive optimisations to the operating system itself, Windows starts up far more quickly than it used to. The startup process that used to entail a minute and a half of disk grinding now whizzes by in less than ten seconds. That doesn’t mean the process is simple. It’s a multi-step chain of technical procedures, and if any one of them goes wrong, you’ll be left staring at an error message or a blank screen – or possibly a blue one. Google takes another swing at the video-calling market, but will Duo prove any more successful than previous efforts? GOOGLE ISN’T A company that’s easily deterred by failure. Unable to crack the video-calling market with its Hangouts service, the firm is trying once again with Duo. But is there any reason to believe Duo will be more successful than its predecessor? And is it bad news for the consumer, making the prospect of cross-platform video calls even less likely? Windows 10’s first birthday has arrived, but I’m in no mood for celebrating. I have a three-year-old laptop with a 128GB SSD inside, and it doesn’t have enough space to install the Anniversary Update. “Windows needs 5.8GB of free space to install the update,” Microsoft’s warning message cheerfully informs me, having already swallowed what little free space I had by downloading the patch in the first place. Shocking advice? Paul Ockenden’s advice on how to fit a home automation controller to a light switch (see issue 264, p113) has left me somewhat concerned. Since fitting these requires modification to mains wiring, this work should always be undertaken by someone experienced in mains wiring. There are several possible ways to wire up a light circuit, and no assumptions at all should be made regarding the meaning of cables going to switches or light fittings. If using standard twin and earth for the switch, blue (or black for older installations) probably isn’t neutral and may even be permanent live. The government’s plans for faster broadband have been dragged back on track, but there remains frustration that few homes in rural areas benefit from fibre connections. In 2010, the government outlined plans to push “superfast” broadband – set as 24Mbits/sec or faster – to 90% of the population by 2015. The initial target was missed while Broadband Delivery UK worked out how to allocate £530m in funding to BT, but that 90% benchmark has now been reached. In fact, the latest figures show that 90.7% of homes can get speeds of 24Mbits/sec. What rights do you have to the data held about you by others? It’s a tough call, because different situations require different solutions.
