In the Top End, 2022 will go down as the year the fishing tour industry came back, and this photo of Doug Blockey reflects exactly that. Doug’s catch is a 109cm barra from the Arnhem Land Barramundi Lodge, but his trip, like so many others in the 2022 Runoff, nearly didn’t happen. An extremely successful season for Million Dollar Fish saw more than 38,000 fishos register to participate in the iconic competition. For every $10,000 fish that was caught, an extra $1,000 was donated to an official Million Dollar Fish charity as nominated by the winning fisho - accruing a total of $17,000 for charity at the close of Season 7. Cancer Council NT has been presented with a cheque for $5,000, which will go towards the Transport to Treatment program and nurse-led clinics to provide counselling and support for patients. So many big barra get caught thanks to that erratic-action retrieve. Recently, I was having a discussion with a mate who invariably fishes for barramundi by casting soft plastic lures. He’s an accomplished angler who hits barra water almost weekly, but it’s been over 20 years since he caught a big one – a barra over a metre long. In my view, of which I’m quite adamant, the reason for his lack of metrey success is that he doesn’t fish with proven hard-body lures at least 15cm long. I’ve advocated many times and in many forums over the years that, if you want to maximise your chances of catching a big barra, you need to fish with bibbed, hard-body lures, and preferably troll them.
