When it comes to race-spec, track-only supermotos they don’t come more potent than KTM’s 450 SMR – nor more advanced than this brand-new 2023 version. While racing supermotos cover many capacities and street-legal versions, such as KTM’s own 690 SMC R can boast up to 700cc, the premier world championship racing class is for 450cc ‘S1’ bikes. The Bike Shed London Show has returned to the capital after a three-year Covid-enforced absence, with 19,000 visitors flocking to the capital’s Tobacco Dock site over the long weekend of May 27-29. The show was organised by Shoreditch venue, the Bike Shed, who offer everything from food and drink, to contemporary biking clothing, to tattoos, and a barbershop. They recently opened a second base in Los Angeles. “We planned a show in 2020 that had to be cancelled, ” Bike Shed co-owner Anthony ‘Dutch’ Van Someren told MCN. “We are kind of lucky to still be here to be honest, so the event was our comeback.” The three-day gathering began in 2013 and has gone from strength to strength. We’ve had our first look under the skin of a new CFMoto electric in the works that uses a modular plug-and-play design that could be adapted into a range of models. The Chinese firm have already revealed images of a police-spec bike developed for the domestic market. And now, thanks to patent documents, we can take a deeper dive into what’s to come. You’d think Indian would hold the press launch of their big 416kg tourer somewhere where the roads are long, straight and smooth. But no. Instead, they’ve let us loose on their new £27,695 Pursuit here in the French Alps, where it’s all switchback after switchback, hairpin after hairpin, and not a stretch of motorway in sight. In his first race after committing to a two-year extension to his lucrative contract, he confirmed that his value to Yamaha is immeasurable. Quartararo delivered an astonishing demolition job to win the Catalunya GP, his second win of the season and 10th since entering MotoGP in 2019. Neither a last-minute change of machinery nor a difficult week of practice could derail the podium ambitions of Michael Dunlop. On the Hawk Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 after the deal to ride the PBM Ducati collapsed at the end of April, Dunlop salvaged a brilliant third place and was the only man to keep Peter Hickman and Dean Harrison honest. Bringing an end to the two-year Covid-19 enforced break to the TT, the Gas Monkey BMW rider controlled the opening race from start to finish. Historically a slow starter who’d allowed close rival Dean Harrison to take an early lead in past TTs, it was a rebooted Hicky that came out of the blocks the fastest, taking a 3.1s lead by the time they arrived at Ballaugh Bridge on the first lap. Watching MotoGP on Sunday was the usual mix of awe and breath-holding – not least when Taka Nakagami brought down Pecco Bagnaia by using his face as battering ram. It was sickening to watch the crash unfold, and even worse to review it from every angle in slow motion. How all three riders escaped serious injury is unfathomably lucky. Ian Anthony Huntly first visited the Isle of Man as a seven-year-old boy in 1947, when the Senior race winner lapped the course at a fastest average speed of 84.07mph. A biking cleric is gearing up to lead a mass charity rideout to Land’s End in a bid to raise money for the Children’s Hospice South West charity. Dubbed the ‘Highway to Well’ the event was debuted last year and proved successful despite poor weather – attracting 35 riders and raising over £700 to help care for children with life-threatening conditions via three hospices in Devon, Somerset, and Cornwall. It’s hoped that this year’s event on Saturday, June 18, will be bigger and is again being organised by Harley-riding Pastor Israel Stanway of Hayle Light & Life Free Methodist Church in Cornwall. Fresh spyshots captured by an eagle-eyed snapper have revealed CCM are making the finishing touches to a new flattrack-inspired Spitfire. The new bike, thought to be called the ‘Classic Tracker’ looks to blend the current Street Tracker with more classic styling touches including a Monza fuel cap. It was spotted on two separate occasions – taking part in a photoshoot with CCM ambassador and former world trails champion Dougie Lampkin on the Cat & Fiddle in Cheshire, and on track at Aiden Collins’ Ride & Skid flattrack school in Buxton. Obviously the star of the Ninja H2 SX SE show is the supercharged motor, but Kawasaki have left no stone unturned in their pursuit of excellence. Year-round all-weather rider, weekend blaster and serial racetrack dweller When I first reported on my time with the KTM 1290 Super Duke R Evo in the May 4 issue, I was around 1600 miles and two months into my time with the Austrian brute and still trying to establish a sense of companionship with it. A glance at the spec sheet suggested it would be love at first sight for a performance bike nut like me, but we struggled to bond in the early stages, due to a few electrical gremlins in the key and rear shock. Getting intimate with your drive chain may seem like a bit of a saddo thing to do, but you will reap the benefits. Keeping on top of cleaning, lubing and adjusting will massively extend the life of your chain, thus offsetting the cost of replacement. Added to the price of the chain is the cost of sprockets. Because if you have neglected the chain then the sprockets will have accelerated wear as well. My own routine of chain care is done when I have cleaned the bike – I treat the chain as a completely separate item in my cleaning regime. It’s also something to be done even when the rest of the bike doesn’t need a spruce. Remember, it’s the last part of the transmission, and it’s totally exposed…

Britain’s Jake Dixon hailed Sunday as his best Moto2 performance yet after finishing fourth – just 0.6s off the winner. Dixon was one of four riders fighting for victory in a thrilling contest after early leader Joe Roberts crashed out on lap 11. But the result was bittersweet after Augusto Fernandez nabbed the final podium place with just three turns to go. “Just annoyed, ” said Dixon immediately after the race, which was won by Celestino Vietti. “I was struggling to turn the bike compared to the others. Marc Marquez’s fourth surgery in the USA has repositioned his right arm by a massive 30 degrees. With the humerus bone effectively re-broken in the process, he is back to square one in recovering full strength. It is his own determination as much as overly compliant doctors to blame. If he hadn’t got back on his RC213V Honda five days after the first injury at Jerez in 2020, two days after Dr Xavier Mir had attached a titanium plate with 12 screws and then passed him fit to ride, he might now have added more titles to his eight so far. Instead, he’s now starting again. After the first operation, straight back on the bike, the stress bent the plate. A new one was inserted two weeks after the first.…

Sidecar passenger Olivier Lavorel died following an incident on the opening lap of the first Sidecar on Saturday. The 35-year-old, from Sillingy, France, was competing in his first Isle of Man TT as the passenger to César Chanel. The accident occurred at Ago’s Leap, just under one mile into the Mountain Course. Lavorel and Chanel, also a newcomer, had been elevated from start number 39 to number 21 after qualifying 15th with an impressive lap speed of 108.420mph. Together, Lavorel and Chanel had taken several victories and podiums in the French F1 and F2 National Sidecar Championships. Chanel was taken to Noble’s Hospital by road and then airlifted to Aintree Hospital, Liverpool, in a critical condition. Dean Harrison had no answer for the relentless pace of Peter Hickman in the opening Superbike race, but showed his class to secure second place and his 17th TT career podium. Like all his main rivals, the 33-year-old was riding a new bike at the TT, with each of the major manufacturers introducing new flagship Superbikes. But Harrison also had the additional challenge of adapting to Dunlop tyres after a career on Metzelers. Wigan-based Langen Technology are developing a new modular battery system that they believe could revolutionise the off-road and greenlaning industry. A sister firm to Langen Motorcycles (the team behind the Two-Stroke café racer), they have been working on the design for the past three years and developed a running prototype using their technology around a year ago. “We’re looking 10 years ahead, so we have to be ready for electrification, ” Langen’s Chris Ratcliffe told MCN. Sitting where a conventional engine would, the honeycombshaped batteries can be stacked for more range, or reduced to make the bike lighter.
