Apple isn’t cancelling its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this year, but it is changing the format. According to a statement, Apple will hold WWDC 2020 online in order to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. In the statement, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller referred to the pandemic as the “current health situation”. He also said Apple aimed to create a “new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full programme with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world”. Schiller did not specify the actual dates, but he confirmed that the event would be held in June as usual. There might not be any retail stores to visit for a while, but that’s not slowing Apple’s roll. It has launched a brand new MacBook Air with more storage, more speed, and a better keyboard, all for hundreds of pounds less than the current model. With a 10th-generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processor, Apple claims the new MacBook Air delivers “up to two times faster CPU performance and up to 80 percent faster graphics performance” than the previous MacBook Air. Both base models have lower clock speeds than their predecessors (1.1GHz vs 1.6GHz), but the new chip architecture, Intel Iris Plus Graphics and LPDDR4X memory should deliver a noticeable boost. If you worked in an office before the coronavirus pandemic, there’s a good chance you’re now working from home. It can feel limiting, especially if you only have a MacBook. Fortunately, you can drastically improve your productivity by hooking up an external monitor to your workstation, usually by using one display as a reference and doing your actual work in the other. We’re all concerned about diagnosing the coronavirus, so it’s a shame Apple Watch can’t take our temperatures. Neither can a WearOS smartwatch or the Fitbit Versa. During a time when more people than ever are concerned about having a fever, it’s a shortcoming that seems particularly glaring. It’s not your watch’s fault, however. Skin readings, particularly on the wrist, are less than ideal for monitoring body temperature due to stress, sweat, and other external oscillating factors. For now, any attempts to do so would be inaccurate at best. When we reviewed the 2018 MacBook Air – a newly renovated version of what had been an aging laptop – we found it to be good, but not great. We’ve been waiting for iCloud folder sharing since Apple announced it in June of 2019. With iOS 13.4 and macOS Catalina 10.15.4, the feature has finally arrived. Now you can invite several other people to a single iCloud folder, where they can access or add files. You can give people permission to make changes to the folder (adding, changing or deleting files) or give them view-only permission. On iPhone or iPad Open the Files app and navigate to iCloud Drive. While the release of its own over-ear headphones may be in doubt due to the coronavirus, Apple has launched a new pair of Powerbeats with a longer-lasting battery, Siri support, and super-fast charging over Lightning. But the best enhancement may be the price: £129, 25 percent less than the Powerbeats 3.
