The Apple Menu The Apple menu is located at the top left of the desktop. To use it click on the Apple icon once, then choose an option. To close it, click on the Apple icon again. It is always available and always contains the same set of options: About this Mac This opens a window displaying information such as the software version, hardware configuration, startup disk and a software update option. Accessing Notification Centre There are two ways of accessing the Notification Centre; you can click on an icon in the Menu Bar or use a trackpad gesture. 1 Click the icon showing three horizontal lines preceded by bullet points, which is found on the far right-hand side of the Apple menu bar at the top of the screen. Changing the View There are several ways to view your calendars, and moving between them is simple. Using the FaceTime Camera. Notebook Macs and the iMac have built-in front-facing FaceTime cameras mounted just above the screen, as you can see on the MacBook Air shown here. It’s perfect for video chatting. Using FaceTime and your Mac’s built-in camera for video chat is, as always, very easy. All you need is your Mac, an active Wi-Fi connection, an email address and your Apple ID. Take a Photo Taking a basic snap of yourself in the macOS Photo Booth app is very easy. Follow these instructions to see how it’s done. 1 There are three buttons in the bottom left corner of the window. They are (left to right) take four photos in quick succession; take a photo; make a video. Click the middle one. 2 Click the red button. There’s a three second countdown before the shutter clicks, to give you time to strike the perfect pose. General The General options let you customise several different view options such as the colour of buttons and icons, the colour of highlighted items in Finder, and how scrollbars appear. It also allows you to control whether applications should open the windows or documents you last viewed when you relaunch an application. How to Hide and Reveal the Menu Bar Hiding the menu bar keeps your desktop uncluttered. Like a hidden Dock, it pops up when you drag your pointer to it. 1 As you know, you can hide the Dock by going into System Preferences > Dock, and checking ‘Automatically hide and show the Dock’. Entering and Using Full Screen There are several ways you can take an application into full-screen mode, and lots you can do when you’re there. 1 To take an app into full-screen mode, click on the green button in the top left corner; alternatively, choose Enter Full Screen from the View menu or use the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl-CMD-F. Storing Your Documents in iCloud Storing your files in iCloud is as simple as moving them to a folder. They’re then synced with all devices logged into your iCloud. 1 Click on your desktop to open Finder, then open iCloud Drive from the Go menu. You may need to log into iCloud using your Apple ID. Setting Up the Keychain iCloud Keychain is a great way of storing your passwords in the cloud, so you don’t have to remember them. Mission Control in a Nutshell If you’ve used Mission Control in macOS and OS X before, the High Sierra release should be familiar. How to Use Split View Screen With the Mac’s Split View feature, you can enjoy using two apps in full-screen mode at the same time. Using Picture in Picture Mode With the macOS Picture in Picture viewing feature, you can watch a video in a floating window that’s always on top. 1 Picture in Picture (PiP) won’t work with all web videos.
