CUTTING OUT 1 Cut a few strips of fabric to the height of the Half Hexie template you will be using for your project, either 1¼in or 2in. 2 Stack a few strips on top of one another, taking care to align the long edges, so that you can cut several half hexies at once. Line up the top edge of the template with the top of the strip. How did you first get into Foundation Paper Piecing? I wanted to make something for my mom, who loves mushrooms, and found a fairly simple FPP mushroom pattern online. A few YouTube tutorials later, and off I went! Now it’s almost exclusively what I do. What’s your favourite block you’ve ever made, and why? My favourite block that I have made was a commission from someone whose dog had recently passed (Elsa, pictured top left). I love getting to hear the stories of people's loved pets, and in this particular pattern the dog was wearing a cute little sweatshirt. You’ve said that you found your first quilting home with the African American Quilters of Baltimore, who taught you the best techniques to express your quilt vision. Tell us a little more about this experience and how it influenced your quilting. Yes, I learned foundational quiltmaking skills from the master quilters of the African American Quilters of Baltimore (AAQB). I will be forever grateful to them for giving me a solid foundation that allows me to execute my visions. And, although most of the members of AAQB were traditional quilters, they strongly encouraged me to develop my own approach to quilt design and construction. BEGINNER’S GUIDE: HOW TO SEW HALF-RECTANGLE TRIANGLES Half-rectangle Triangles (HRTs) are like the big sibling of the Half-square Triangle. As the name suggests, the block is a rectangle made from two triangles. There is no standard ratio for these blocks, but commonly they will be either a 2:1 ratio (E.g. 6in x 3in) or a 3:1 ratio (E.g. 9in x 3in). Note that the higher the ratio is, the steeper the diagonal line will appear.
