How did you first get into quilting? My first quilt was a queen size quilt that I made in college as a Christmas present for a boyfriend. Looking back, I did so many things wrong, I’m sure it’s no longer usable. I started quilting again when my friends began having babies. The first quilt I made that I think really defines my current style was for a friend who paints sunsets. I wanted to make her a quilt that felt like ‘her’, so the sunset design came into being. What’s your all-time favourite quilt pattern? My favourite pattern is my NightSky Quilt pattern (top right). I have made hundreds of these in all different variations. HOW TO APPLIQUÉ CLAMSHELLS In this tutorial Kate shows you in detail how to appliqué clamshells with ease. Her handy technique uses clamshell templates, a clever ironing method to shape the clamshells, and a quick appliqué finish to quilt all of your clamshell pieces in place PREPARING THE CLAMSHELLS 1 Kate has used the template provided on p82 to make her clamshells. The outer dotted line is used to cut the fabric pieces, including the seam allowance. The inner solid line is used to make a template for pressing. You can use any size of template, and there are many commercially available. 45-DEGREE TRIMMER 1 Place the 45-degree trimmer in one corner of your fabric piece, aligning the edges of the trimmer and fabric. Trim away the corner at one edge. Then repeat the process in any other 45-degree corners, as is shown in Fig 1. Repeat with all of your triangle pieces. 2 When sewing the pieces, place right sides together, and align the flat edges of the pieces at the corners. This will work for any 45-degree angled pieces, including both HSTs and Economy Blocks. As the dog ears have been trimmed, you won’t have to guess about any overhanging edges. The cutting instructions we have given here are for the use of sixteen prints, however you can use more prints if you want your quilt to have a scrappier look. ■ The two pieces you will be working with are convex (Template A) and concave (Template B). The convex shape has the curve going outwards and the concave shape is the corner piece where the curve sweeps inwards. ■ You may want to use pins to secure the pieces before sewing to help with curved piecing, or you can try temporarily gluing the seams first with a washable fabric glue, which is the same glue you might use for English Paper Piecing (EPP). ■ Go slow. Your partner’s Mamaw was a big inspiration in your quilting journey. How did she introduce you to the wonderful world of quilting? Mamaw was the first real quilter I ever met. She had grown up quilting with her mom and sisters and knew a lot of the traditional East Tennessee quilting techniques.
