Every quilt tells its own story. The quilt maker chooses their fabric, pattern (or lack thereof), piecing methods, quilting and more. Each of those decisions tells us about the maker and their history. Some quilts tell a quiet story and as an observer, more time is needed to learn about the maker. Other quilts are loud and proud about their story, and Chawne Kimber’s quilts certainly fit into this latter category. QuiltCon in 2015 provided me with the opportunity to experience Chawne’s quilts first-hand. In the corner of a quilt display, there was a quilt composed of four self-portrait blocks. Each block showed a woman in a hoodie sweatshirt. I immediately remembered similar images I had seen of Trayvon Martin after his murder. The quilt also brought back the feelings…

I'll be honest – cutting is my least favourite part of the quilting process. The first couple of cuts into a fresh fabric stack are exciting, but it soon gets tiresome and I have been guilty of abandoning projects halfway through a cutting list! The mere thought of individually cutting each of my hoard of fabric scraps into a neat 2in square has me running from my sewing room. So when I was asked to test out a machine that claims to change cutting out forever, I was desperate to give it a whirl.
