“The homeowners embarked on this renovation hoping to revive their 1890s house and to inject some personal style into the home. Above all, the kitchen needed to be functional, practical and easy to maintain. One of its main faults was that it was enclosed. During the renovation, the room was opened up to integrate seamlessly with the nearby living area, creating a space perfect for both entertaining and family living. The homeowners really loved the Carrara marble benchtop in the former kitchen, but it was a bit worn so we removed it from the benchtop and used it strategically in other parts of the space. “This home’s original kitchen was small, with a crowded collection of cabinets that made the room very unworkable, so creating flow and a focal point for the adjoining living areas was always the priority for the design of the kitchen space. The wall between the kitchen and library was shortened to enable joinery used in the kitchen to wrap around this central wall, providing a connection with the library, dining and living rooms. Multiple zones have then been created around this central wall including library storage/display, long-term refrigeration for the kitchen and bench space. “This French- and Italian-inspired four-level home was built in the early 2000s, however the full potential of the house was only recently realised when the new owners completed an internal fitout. ‘Montepulciano’, as this home has been appropriately named, was based on a house discovered in the Tuscan township, Montepulciano, Italy, by the previous owners. Surrounded by vineyards, the residence was the perfect home for the couple to replicate on their land on the Mornington Peninsula. The new owners wanted a kitchen that was going to complement their unique home and be a standout. It also needed to tie in with the build, a truly timeless classic.
