Jefa Greenaway is very rarely lost for words. BVN Brisbane Studio, Brisbane by BVN Designed by BVN in 2012 as the exemplar for Brisbane City Council’s ‘Buildings that Breathe’ guidelines, the Annex is the smaller building adjacent to Brisbane’s blue tower. “In Brisbane, the idea of how to make a south-east Queensland building has become more deliberate in planning terms. So, what that means is how do you make a commercial building with the capacity to engage with the outdoor in terms of natural ventilation or elevated gardens or permeable underbellies,” says BVN principal, Brian Donovan. As such, the Annex includes what Donovan describes as a “ventilating façade” being an open and street-oriented design, not dissimilar to that of a traditional Queenslander’s latticed verandah that allows the building to be part of the public domain. Flinders University Biodiversity Facility, Adelaide by H2o Architects and Phillips/Pilkington Architects Walking down the corridor with its combination of blue and yellow Danpalon skylights is akin to walking under water. The last thing one would expect of a biodiversity facility would be that it was inspired by theatre as much as to create a specialised research facility in a university setting. However, this new facility, located at South Australia’s Flinders University, combines the practicalities with a sense of escape. Designed by H2o Architects in association with Phillips/Pilkington Architects, it could easily be compared to a ‘disco for fish and lizards’. The shift towards personalised, flexible spaces has played a critical role in the design of learning environments for several years. We are now comfortable with the idea that individuals learn in different ways and that schools and classrooms need to provide opportunities for varied learning experiences. Long gone is the traditional desks-in-a-row classroom model where students were expected to sit and passively listen to a teacher. Not surprisingly then, and more and more frequently, a client’s design brief will call for the provision of ‘flexible spaces’. But what is meant by ‘flexibility’? Understanding how valuable this is to interior designers, Krost’s new Melbourne showroom is the living embodiment of the commercial furniture that the brand designs and manufactures. H+O’s work is a response to modern times, but not in the way you might think. Port Melbourne Secondary College, Melbourne by Billard Leece Partnership (BLP) Conceived as a vertical school, Port Melbourne Secondary College (PMSC) has been realised as a progressive learning hub for both students and the local community. Sited within a designated precinct for advanced technology, innovation, and education, the school is part of Australia’s largest urban renewal project. Connecting Melbourne’s CBD to the bay, the Fishermans Bend precinct comprises 480 hectares in the heart of Melbourne, and is projected to house 80,000 people by 2050 while providing employment for a further 80,000. Many traditional institutions are seeing the trend of diminished visitation and therefore diminished funding. As a result, cultural spaces are undergoing a monumental shift as museums reimagine themselves to broaden their reach to new audiences. The future of museums is fast evolving through innovative initiatives in public programs, participatory culture, play and learning. So what role do museums play in our current context? In the not-too-distant past, museums were synonymous with formal adult-focused environments – a culture very much built around the protocol of ‘look but don’t touch’.
