A new drug, Veltassa, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat potentially deadly hyperkalemia, a condition linked to high blood levels of potassium that causes unhealthy slow heart beats. A powder that mixes with water, Veltassa forces potassium out of the body. But Veltassa can also decrease the effectiveness of other drugs that are taken orally, scientists found. So doctors recommended using the new drug at least six hours before — or after — taking other pills. About 2.4 million American heart patients suffer from high potassium levels.
