COMMUNITY members are convinced that the two young boys who became trapped in the boot of a car in Jan Kempdorp would not have gotten into the vehicle of their own accord. A three-year-old and four-year-old boy were reported missing by their parents on March 16 and were found two days later, five houses away from their residences in Valspan. They were found locked inside the boot of a Mercedes-Benz car that was parked at the back of a mechanic’s yard on Monday afternoon, following a frantic search involving the community and the police. The Jan Kempdorp police have opened an inquest into the death of the three-year-old boy. The four-year-old boy survived but was very weak and dehydrated when he was found. THE EVENT organisers of the Diamonds and Dorings Music Festival, which will take place next weekend, said this week that it is “all systems go” for the event. The festival was arranged in the space of only a few weeks after it was announced on February 7 that the event would be revived following a request from the Office of the Premier to allow the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to host and fund the event this year. THE SOUTH African Army bestowed tokens of appreciation to DFA journalists this week, for ensuring that decorated World War II veteran Oupa William Peter “Soldaat” van Wyk was given the recognition he deserved for selflessly serving his country. Van Wyk was born in Beaconsfield in Kimberley on June 9, 1922, and was recognised by the SANDF as the oldest WWII veteran in the country. He passed away on February 28 at the age of 101 years and was buried last week. Van Wyk’s plight first came to the attention of DFA journalist Boipelo Mere, as he was initially not recognised as a WWII veteran as he was a member of the Cape Coloured Corps when he served in the ex-servicemen’s legion in 1922. This disparity is primarily attributed to genetic predispositions that make them susceptible to uncontrolled high blood pressure, a condition that often leads to kidney disease. Professor Feziwe Bisiwe, the head of the neurology clinical unit at Universitas Academic Hospital, has aptly classified kidney disease as a “silent killer”. THE KIMBERLEY police have requested the public’s assistance in locating the relatives of an unknown man who was found hanging from a tree in the veld near Barkly Road in Bloemanda. Police spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Sam said the police have previously sent out statements in an attempt to find the relatives of the deceased, but all attempts have thus far been unsuccessful. “The police released statements on Tuesday, December 19, 2024, as well as on Friday, January 26, 2024, about an unknown male person hanging in a tree along Barkly Road. The MEC for Coghsta, Bentley Vass, stated on March 8 that the decision by the Thembelihle municipal council to reinstate the senior manager of corporate services, Trevin Ralph Oliphant, and uplift the suspension of the chief financial officer, Radile Shuping, went against his advice and should be reversed.
