GAUTENG diamond dealer Louis Liebenberg, who is no stranger to controversy, paid a surprise visit to the Hawks’ provincial office in Kimberley this week, to tell them that he was not “running away”. The head of the provincial Hawks, Major-General Steve Mabuela, was however not available to welcome Liebenberg to his offices on September 6. Liebenberg was in Kimberley after he instituted a R5 million defamation lawsuit against DA MP Veronica van Dyk for “false and malicious” statements on a Facebook post on July 14, 2020, that alleged he was running an illegal Ponzi scheme. ORION Minerals has announced it has awarded a six-month trial mining contract to P2 Mining, a subsidiary of South African mining contractor Newrak Mining Group, to undertake the early works trial underground mining programme at the Prieska Copper-Zinc mine in the Northern Cape. In a statement, Orion said Newrak would operate a trial fleet of ITC (integrated tool carriers) equipment with a full conventional mechanised mining fleet to compare efficiencies during the trial mining phase. Newrak Mining Group is an experienced South African contract mining company with 28 years of operating history. “Newrak will operate both with a fleet of conventional load, haul and dump loaders and with an innovative continuous loading machine which has recently been introduced to the South African market and secured by Orion on demonstration rental,”…

THE EXECUTIVE mayor of Sol Plaatje Municipality, Kagisho Sonyoni, met with disgruntled residents of Lethabo Park Phase 2 on September 6, where he committed that the electrification of 512 erven in the settlement will kick off today. Sonyoni said that everything in the electrification process has been finalised and the project is at the implementation phase. The mayor’s visit comes after the residents of the informal settlement, situated near Roodepan, blocked parts of Starling and Eagle streets with stones and rubbish on Tuesday morning to voice their unhappiness over delays to the electrification project. THE NORTHERN Cape High Court granted an application to postpone the R5 million defamation lawsuit that was brought against DA Member of Parliament Veronica van Dyk by controversial Gauteng diamond dealer Louis Liebenberg this week. Van Dyk alleged on social media that Liebenberg was racist and was also swindling unsuspecting victims of millions of rand through an illegal Ponzi scheme. According to the provisional liquidator’s report, Liebenberg’s diamond and gold company Tariomix entered into joint venture agreements with investors to provide capital for the company to trade in diamonds. Investors were allegedly lured with promises of sharing “handsome” profits. Deposits were paid into a virtual wallet through a third-party provider – All Encompassing Switching (Pty) Ltd – by investors who were added to a private Facebook group and WhatsApp group…

In a unique sporting spectacle, the Northern Cape Heat cricket team recently hosted the Griquas rugby team for a thrilling 100-ball cricket game at the Kimberley Diamond Oval. At the end of the day, the game ended in a draw, with both teams scoring 150 runs. To make the competition fair, the NC Heat team swapped roles. AFRIFORUM in the Northern Cape has threatened to take legal steps if Sol Plaatje Municipality does not urgently tackle the problem of “contaminated” water at Kamfers Dam, outside of Kimberley. The civil rights organisation raised the alarm bell when it informed the local municipality of the results of tests conducted on the dam water by a private accredited laboratory, PathCare. AfriForum stated that the results revealed high levels of coliform bacteria in the Kamfers Dam water, which is home to at least 60 different species of water birds and an important breeding site for the vulnerable greater and lesser flamingo. WHAT a tragic week this has been. Really sad. During this past week, I learned that a family of six was, mysteriously, found dead in their home. There was no evidence of foul play, but upon deeper investigation it was discovered that a deadly spider was found inside the kettle from which they drank tea. This must be the unluckiest family alive … I mean dead, because these unfortunate souls have been dying from boiled spider water since August 2013.
