THREE foreign nationals who were prevented from leaving the country with R11 million in their bank account will apply for bail in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on March 13. The accused, who are all Bangladesh nationals - Aminul Islam, 39, Ullah Foji, 36 and Akter Atika, 23, were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team and Kimberley Crime Prevention unit on March 3. Hawks provincial spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe said the accused allegedly tampered with a drop-safe that was used at their shop between March 1 to 3. “They allegedly dropped an amount of R560 000 repeatedly, thereby making their drop-safe app account linked to the safe to be credited with approximately R11 million,” said Thebe. WARRENTON residents are expected to be without water for another six weeks, after it was discovered that 20 metres of the main pipeline that supplies water to the town was washed away during the recent floods. An advisory from Magareng Municipality this week indicated that there were three water trucks operating in Warrenton after one truck broke down. “We are trying to source extra trucks so that there will be six trucks altogether.” The entire town has been without water since February 21 after the sluice gates were opened. SEVERAL government services in the Northern Cape came to a standstill this week as members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) embarked on a strike, demanding a 10% wage increase. Members of Nehawu went on strike on Monday and communities across the country were denied access to several services or entrance to facilities such as hospitals, clinics and other government departments. In the Northern Cape several government departments had to close their doors after falling victim to angry Nehawu members who barricaded the entrances to some buildings with rubble and burning tyres. The Northern Cape Department of Health said that health facilities in the Frances Baard District were the worst affected. THE MATHS and Science Leadership Academy (MSLA), a non-profit centre that offers after-school computer lessons to Grade 9 to Grade 12 pupils, received a donation of five all-in-one computers, valued at more than R100 000, from the Flamingo Casino in Kimberley. The academy offers lessons to teachers, unemployed youth and residents who require their services. PUPILS from Technical High School Kimberley made the Northern Cape proud by scooping first and second place at the national leg of the “Engage South Africa my.voice Best Youth-Led Initiatives” of 2022/23. The team from THS Kimberley School that participated in the programme initially consisted of 28 pupils divided into five groups. The first prize was scooped by the Fighting Substance Abuse (FSA) team, through an incredible campaign to educate the youth at their school and community about substance addiction and abuse, the dangers, and the long-term effects that it has on the human body.
