A HANDWRITTEN letter attesting to the “good character” of the former owner of the defunct Shadows Pub and Grill, Hansie Galloway, has been handed in as evidence ahead of sentencing that is expected to take place next month. Galloway was found guilty of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl during 2014 and 2015. The girl was living with him in Douglas at the time of the incidents as he was involved in a relationship with her mother. The State has advised that Galloway should be handed a fine and a suspended sentence. AN ATTEMPT will be made to remove the Speaker of Thembelihle Municipality, Danny Jonas, in the Northern Cape High Court today, as a councillor and Speaker. This follows a council meeting that was disrupted on September 23 that was convened to table a forensic investigation into irregular tenders that were awarded by the municipality. In lawyer’s letters, the ANC in the Pixley ka Seme region stated that Jonas had acted unlawfully. “There is an urgent court application set for Friday (September 30) concerning the status of Jonas and his unlawful attempts to continue to act as the Speaker.” Calteaux and Partners attorneys stated that Jonas did not have the authority to call a special council meeting on September 23. THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform aims to reach 10 000 rabies vaccinations of pets in the Province. Earlier this week the department, under the theme “Rabies: One Health, Zero Death”, joined the world in celebrating World Rabies Day at the Ikhutseng Hall near Warrenton and vaccinated dogs and cats. SOL PLAATJE Municipality said that next week’s city-wide water shutdown from October 6 to 10 is needed to repair leaks on infrastructure that is 72 years old, where water losses of 60 percent have been incurred. Municipal spokesperson Thoko Riet said the bulk water supply pipelines were of a similar age. “Planned work for the water interruption includes repairing leaks at Riverton water purification plant, mid-station, Newton Reservoir, valve replacements and bulk water pipelines,” said Riet. “With the old and aged water infrastructure, the municipality is experiencing frequent leaks, pipe bursts and general infrastructure failures in some parts of the city. EP LEKHELA High School in Galeshewe hosted several stakeholders during their Career Exhibition Day while also celebrating Heritage Day. The Unamandla Foundation, headed by Miss SA Teen Universe 2023, Unamandla Vilakazi, a 14-year-old Grade 8 learner, adopted EP Lekhela High School as a part of her campaign. Vilakazi, who prides herself in advocating education, runs several campaigns in an effort to change the mindset and behaviours of young people. IT MUST have been in late 1985 that my two friends and I decided to have a marathon movie night. George Lucas’s Return of the Jedi had been released two years earlier, and by the summer of ’85, the movie was finally available on VHS, as were the first two movies of what was then a trilogy. RESIDENTS of Lethabo Park have vowed not to allow the real owners of the so-called ghost shacks to return to the shacks because they failed to claim them on a previous occasion. Residents are now giving these shacks to people who are in desperate need of homes. They prevented several people from claiming the shacks when the electrification process of Lethabo Park started. Residents also complained that these empty shacks have been delaying development in their settlement. They accused the people who claimed to be owners of the shacks of failing to heed previous calls by the municipality to occupy their shacks, which were also posing a safety risk while standing empty. ON JUNE 19, 2007, Mokala National Park, a reserve, was formed in the Plooysburg region, south-west of Kimberley, in the Northern Cape. The park covers a total area of 26,485 hectares. EYEBROWS have been raised over Sol Plaatje municipal officials being allowed to participate in week-long trip to the municipal games in Mpumalanga with an estimated budget of R1.5 million. It has not been confirmed who funded the trip. An item was put up for discussion on September 12 for the approval of 160 Sol Plaatje employees and councillors to attend the municipal games in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, from September 26 until October 1. The municipal teams compete in friendly games as part of employee wellness, team building, networking and recreation.
