TWO MINORS were arrested in connection with the murder of a bed and breakfast owner in Ritchie, Gunther Schwalb, 68, on April 28. Schwalb went outside the house at around 4am on the day of the incident after he suspected that intruders had trespassed onto the property and were in the process of stealing his wife’s Volkswagen Golf. After the suspects apparently threw stones at him, hitting him on the head, he retreated back into the house, where he collapsed and died on the scene. His wife called the police and the local neighbourhood watch and the suspects fled the scene on foot. Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock said that the police arrested two boys, aged 14 and 17 years old, on April 28 at around 4.30pm in Motswedimosa, Ritchie.…

THE MEDAL bedecked Zen Shotokan Karate Club is desperately looking for a new home in which to restart their world championship winning streak which was disrupted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sensei Sam Nkosi, a seventh dan karateka and retired SAPS Colonel, was clearly frustrated when he spoke to the DFA about his club’s endless battle to find a home base of whatever description around Kimberley. Nkosi said his club had, before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, used the Montshiwa Primary school hall for practice. DESPITE having already won the Premiership title, Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has insisted that his team will continue to try and win their remaining games and are hoping to better the 67 points they got last season. THE RESIDENTS of Natasha Street in Homestead have complained about an increase in “deadly” snakes entering their yards and homes due to the overgrown veld that is situated between their properties and the Sol Plaatje Municipality’s wastewater treatment plant. They have called on the municipality to clean up the area, which they say has become a “health hazard” to the neighbourhood. One of the residents said the latest incident was on Tuesday afternoon when her husband almost stepped on a puff adder in their backyard. A WANTED suspect who has been “evading” arrest has been traced and found inside a correctional facility in Kuruman. Police spokesperson Captain Olebogeng Tawana said yesterday that the police were searching for Katlego Sylvester Sebolai in connection with several criminal cases. “The Northern Cape provincial tracking team followed up a lead, subsequent to being tasked to trace Sebolai on cases related to a car hijacking in Batlharos, armed robbery in Pampierstad, the unlawful possession of a firearm in Mothibistad and a rape in Pampierstad,” said Tawana. He added that the suspect was found detained at Kuruman prison on May 3. “He is serving a four-year prison sentence for escaping from lawful custody. The suspect is expected to appear soon before the respective magistrate’s court.”…

A GREENPOINT resident, Saartjie Jonas, who owns Shalom Christian School and Daycare Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre, rose like a phoenix from the ashes to make her dream of owning an ECD centre and a feeding scheme programme aimed at alleviating hunger in her community a reality. Jonas said she had to rebuild her dreams and aspirations after the previous ECD centre she was running with a co-owner burnt down in 2013. THE NORTHERN Cape Department of Roads and Public Works said that work on the R31 in the vicinity of Wildebeestkuil Pan, which has been dubbed Zamani Lakeside, is ongoing and that a safety assessment will soon be conducted following completion of the emergency gravel lane. Department spokesperson Crystal Robertson said a stop-and-go traffic control system has been instituted approximately 11km outside of Barkly West towards Gong-Gong. “The road surface was damaged by underground water and roadworks on this section have already commenced,” said Robertson. The update follows complaints of a lack of communication by the department regarding the re-opening of this section of the R31 and the progress made thus far.
